For once we are actually staying in Ambleside itself this weekend.  Looking for a decent pub for a bar meal and decent real ale.  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

No good for real ale but Zeferrelli's is good for food.  The Sun Hotel at Troutbeck did OK food the last time I was in there, but it's a drive from Ambleside obviously. The Golden Rule is supposed to be very good in Ambleside but they don't do food.  The Queens Hotel did reasonable food a few years ago when I last tried it and they do real ale too IIRC.

Thanks Cath.  Tried booking Zeferrelli's but they could only offer 7.30 or 9.30.  With our track record for getting off hills we thought 7.30 might be pushing it and 9.30 too late.

Did google and came across the Queens and also the Unicorn that seem to do food and real ale.  Both quite close to each other so can have a look in each and see what they are like.  Then to the Golden Rule which I've been to before but as you say doesn't do food but is a cracking pub for a good pint!

I was going to suggest The Golden Rule for beer and The Priest Hole for food.

Thanks Glyn, The Priest Hole looks good.

I tried the Priest Hole on someone's recommendation. My wife and I found it a classic case of 'the menu is better than the food'. In other words, it looked impressive on the menu but the food itself was mediocre (especially for the price). We've not bothered to go back

Not pubs, but the Thai restaurant Doi Intanon (01539432119) can be superb (if a little variable), and the Italian restaurant Luigi's (01539433676) is usually pretty good. Zefferellis is OK (and very popular!) - it's all vegetarian, which is not a problem for me, but I find the food can be a little bland and unadventurous.

for decent ales i would suggest the rule, for decent food well i suppose it depends what your after.  For pub food the Queens hotel has a large menu of resonable meals, the white lion does good nosh that comes in huge quantaties and does a good roast on a sunday,  the unicorn does food but ive never eaten there personally and i think they have good selection of ales too.  Priest hole is good too, it just doesnt have the ales.  Waterhead down at the lake is nice too, but a bit more expensive pub grub.

away from pubs, like graeme says luigis is good, lucys 4 is my personal fav, food is amazing, but it does get busy!!  Dodd used to be good too but they have recently changed hands and am not sure if its stayed the same, we think its still in a transition period at the mo so not as good as once was.  Stampers does the best steak in ambleside, but is tiny.  i thinks thats the majority, o and of course theres the chippy!!

Surprised it took so long for Lucy's to get a mention - not so sure if they do real ale - the red wine was good.
