Hello all.

People who know me know that I don't do heat well. At all. And it seems to be getting worse as I get older. So I have decided that I need to move somewhere cold for the sake of my health.

I don't mean somewhere that is very cold in winter but very hot in summer, but somewhere the temperature rarely, if ever, goes above 24 degrees C or so at the hottest, preferably less. Coast would be a bonus. Wind is good.

I know OMers are a cosmopolitan bunch, so I thought I'd ask you

One other thing - it has to be somewhere one can live without being a research scientist or a hunter. South Georgia looks beautiful but I suspect I'd find it hard to earn a living there.

Hello NNPB

An interesting challenge

can i ask a few questions first?

Have you got to work?

Do your family want to go?

How old are you?

And, you are not alone! I can't stand it when the weather forecaster says `it's going to be a lovely 30c today'.

How about Lerwick?  Shetlands rarely see temps above the low 20s and there's plenty of interesting, and rather windy, coastline

Well, you do talk about your desire to move to Scotland, NNPB, and if you want to stay in the UK, that seems the most sensible thing.

Have you had a look at the met office website for average max temperatures over a 30 year period? Quite useful.

Northern Ireland might also be an option.

If you want to move abroad, how about South Island New Zealand? I'm assuming you'd want somewhere English speaking.

Northern Scotland is a pretty good bet.  The further north you go the chillier it gets.  Still potential to be warm but not very warm.  Moray Coast has some great places, with the advantage that at the western edge it's an easy drive to the Cairngorms.  Further north things get even wilder

I was going to go a little further afield and suggest Norway. Besides, they have polar bears

(at least on Svalbard)

Downing Street, perhaps? Man, they're real 'cold' there!

Alaska! But not 'Baked Alaska', as that's much hotter!

Canada is nice too!

Nearly Normal Polar Bears certainly are, if they're pitched too close to your tent. Little chance for sleep

Oldshoremore

that will suit and Handa island for the summer

Peterhead, locally known as the 'blue toon' as it is always cold there.

Finland? Ryanair sometimes comes here for 1 penny!   Wrote Emerald Fox.

Is not the complaint most usually levelled against that airline, all about the extra charges they add onto the flight on top of the published price though. Have they not been repeatedly accused of misleading their prospective customers time and again over their real final fare prices, and consequently had many industry fines and trading standards fines for doing so! Add on the extra charges to come, on the increased fuel surcharges; and the proposed new 'green' flight taxes to be gradually phased in over the next couple of years, and that price will rise from your quoted estimate of 'a penny' to about ninety quid or more all in, one way!

Insomniac thanks

Yes, unfortunately I do have to work No kids or similar commitments though.

Lindsay - my girlfriend suggested Aberdeen, and we thought that was too close to her parents. Peterhead is even closer

Kate, thank you so much. That's exactly the sort of info I was looking for but couldn't find.

Have had slight second thoughts about Scotland as whenever I've been there outside winter it has been very hot, especially the northwest (obviously there are other compensations!) - that aside, I still love it. I was really wondering if there was a possibility I was overlooking. Cheers everyone.

Hey! What about Iceland....in the freezer section just near the frozen veg!

I recall seeing a bit in the newspapers a good few years back, about sleping bag testers testing out a compny's new down bags in a supermarkets freezer rooom at the back of the store, as well.

NNPB,

Being realistic Canada is your best bet particularly Calgary.

The highest average temps for summer are,

June 22.2c     July22.9c      August 22.5c.

Highest averages can hide a lot of scatter. We had 42C in Kamloops and while driving down the Frazer River Canyon in July 2006. Temps in the Banff and jasper National Parks were in the low 20s C.

Anywhere on the East Coast of Scotland would suit you (preferably North of Edinburgh upwards).

Twenty-five years of experience, and I recall very. very few days when the temperature went above 24º. Mostly it was the famous summer of 2003.

But you see, the East Coast (say, Fife up to Moray) has got this safety device: whenever it gets too hot, at most after two days of hot weather, I mean, you get the haar moving in from the sea, and temperatures plummet in a matter of hours.

It is quite common to have June and July temperatures of 10/12º Celsius. And you don't see the sun for a week or two...

So, I'd say East Coast of Scotland is a fairly safe bet. And if the haar gets you, just drive across to the West Coast to take a peek at the sunshine...
