Hi I'm after advice on whats a suitable waterproof for wearing over my buffalo when its really pouring down, I use my buffalo almost all the time and under most conditions its ideal for me except really heavy rain, the buffalo deals with it OK (in the get soaked but dry quick way that they do) but I'd prefer to have a lightweight waterproof to throw on. My current waterproof is an ancient piece of goretex armour that weighs a ton (well, about a kilo) and is so big that it half fills my rucksack. I like the look of the modern lighter fabrics like e-vent but I am curious about jackets like the Montane Atomic DT, as this is half the weight and half the price of an e-vent jacket but still waterproof and breathable what is the catch? or is that sort of thing the right choice for something you are only going to wear once in a while?

Hi Ben, The montane atomic is a great jacket for the price, not as breathable as the more expensive event jackets in the montane range such as the superfly. Should be adequate for the job you are looking for it do. Looking forward to testing the atomic out for myself in the coming weeks. www.wslackandsons.co.uk

Ive got a golite phantom in paclite with good pit zips, at only 350grams.I find it ideal to throw on top of my montane extreme top (similar to buffalo)

If you already have a pertex windshirt, try it first. You'll be surprised. It's what buffalo themselves suggest, and can give all the extra protection you need when the weather is really coming at you. If you haven't got a pertex windshirt - you probably should have anyway! You can get a Montane featherlight for around £20.

Aye, two layers of Pertex (or any other windproof fabric) gives a semblance of Paramo. But If you do want a waterproof the Haglofs Oz is as light and functional as you'll get in one jacket.

Thanks for the replies guys, Somewhere I've got an old Buffalo jacket (Pertex only, travelite I think it is) so I'll give that a go.

& there was me thinking that my Montane Extreme, like the Buffolo smocks, was a stand-alone garment . . ah well, live and learn as they say !

For me it is almost a stand alone garment, it does deal with the heavy rain but I prefer to stay drier by using a waterproof (but hardly ever), I know thats a cop-out but its still way better for me than the traditional layer system.
