Sleeping bag rating confuse me.

Do people he think that the SkyeHigh 600 rated with a AK Comfort rating: -5C would be too warm for this time of year.

It very much depends on how you sleep, some people sleep cold and need more warmth and in my opinion they would be able to use this bag all summer using the zip to vent or unzip and use as a quilt but for some this bag will be to warm it much depends on your personal circumstances but for me i could use it all summer at a push as i sleep cold when tired if you get what i mean.

I certainly wouldn't buy another bag just for the few months of summer, just unzip it and use like a quilt if it's a bit warm.

beat me to it Sean.

Don't worry, they confuse everybody. Everyone is different. When i'm buying a new sleeping bag, i tend to look at down weight and loft and compare that to what i have been happy with in the past. Compare the Skyehigh 600 with what you have used before.  If you're not sure of how warm you sleep, then it's a bit of trial and error till you find what works for you. A Rab Quantum 250 with a temp rating of 0C does me spring to autumn and i wear more clothes on colder nights.

Wat till you get the 'weight-loss' bug, then you'll have a set-up for every temp.

PKeith - do you own this bag already?

I use it for winter camping - abeit with other gear. I can sleep in my clothes in summer with just a bivvy bag for insulation at night. But everyone is different.

The best bet is to sleep out a few times work out what comfortable and add a few layers per 1000m ascended.

I always add clothing layers. They are more useful than sleeping layers.

It also depends on where you're camping, 'summer' at 3000 feet can get pretty cool, as I've found to me cost in the past

It also depends on the weather... Was on Arran 3 weekends ago and their was ice forming on the tents in the wee small hours, so we were actually quite glad we'd been wimps and put our thicker bags in, even if we didn't do the zips up (those are bags rated to -12 or so, and obviously weren't "too hot").

I didn't see much point in a separate summer bag until I saw a Bargain.  Cotswold had Dewlines for £100, and since I am a sad gear junkie it seemed rude not to...  My usual Lightline isn't exactly huge and weighty, but the Dewline goes substantially smaller and lighter, and that means a smaller, more comfortable rucksack and/or more packing space for other comfort-makers (e.g., beer!).

Pete.

Nope not bought it yet,
I have it in mind to use it biving, so what Jon said had got me think it should be okay.

Also my old(very) ME skywalker2 pack size it huge. The SkyHIgh's looked to pack down to about half the size.

BTW Alpkit doing a special at the moment SH 400, mat, head light, Ti fork, knife, spoon for £100.

Thanks for the input people.

If you were happy with the ME skywalker, measure the loft on it, and get a new, lighter, less pack volume bag with similar loft.

Not for the first time on this forum, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I too have an ME skywalker II, which was amazing when I first got it but now I'm considering non-car camping... well the pack size is impressive, isn't it?

I was idly considering a pipedream 600 so as to cover all my bases - UK Winter and Summer use: I would like to avoid more than one sleeping bag purchase if I can, the pack size matters, the weight (right now) isn't the major priority right now.

So no, I don't think you're indecisive. Oh hang on....

Sorry to throw another idea in the pot PK, but can you wait until Autumn till you get your bag?

Alpkit are bringing out a Pipedream 200 pied d'elefant style bag for £60ish that weighs 460 grams with a -3 comfort rating. You have to use it with an insulated top, like a down jacket or similar, but most people carry this with them anyway and take it off to go to bed. Alpkits own jackets are £50 now I think... if they have any left.

I was lucky enough to get the PD200 in their CoLab Development thing they do. I can get the bag, down jacket and bivvy bag into a compression sack that cinches down to less than the SH600 sack. The whole thing plus a 2L Platty only took up just over half my 25L running pack!!

The downside is that you might get some jealous looks from folk sweating it out with those oversized 35L packs though!!!!

Hello,

I am deciding between the skyhigh 600 and 800. I go walking in the winter in the lake district and we stay in camping barns. Most barns aren't well heated, I would like a bag which will keep me warm but I don't wan't to be roasting. Which bag would you reccomend I haven't ever had a decent sleeping bag.

First comment....even in camping barns, insulation underneath with a decent mat is No1 for me....if you are bleeding heat into the floor (even if a wooden floor) you will end up cold (OK, I end up cold).

What mat are you using?  What size are you? Do you normally (at home) sleep cold or warm?
