Nubuck Care
Looking after new(buck) trail shoes...

Hi all!

I've recently bought a pair of Merrell trail shoes to use for walking in to climbs, tramping around areas with nice paths and generally wearing around the place. They've got nubuck uppers (with meshy ventilation bits) and no waterproofing.

I took them out yesterday, and got them covered in half of Kinder Scout plus various stuff that I'd rather not think about. What should I be doing to clean them? The lad in the shop said that being not waterproof, they wouldn't respond well to getting wet, and I can imagine the stitching rotting if they stayed too damp for too long (I've had other footwear that that seemed to happen to) but I'm not sure how wet and for how long is acceptable.

Anyone with advice / experience?

cotton thread rots. it's unlikely these are made with cotton thread.

a soft brush, like a shoe shine brush, under the shower should get rid of the muck.

Very unlikely getting water on these shoes would cause the thread to rot -- I think the lad in the shop was talking blox. Do like Parky advises and maybe treat them with Nikwax fabric and leather proofer, or one of the sprays by the likes of Graingers, to stop them soaking up too much moisture.

I wash my nubuck /mesh Merrells in the washing machine with a leather wash, found at all good saddleries if not at outdoor shops .  And yes, they've been through that more than once and held up just fine!  I too use the dab on NikWax to give them a DWR surface...

Good details of the care necessary to be metered out to boots of this construction on the actual Nikwax website.

lol. didn't like to mention that all my shoe type things go in an old pillow case and get flung in the washing machine on a gentle wash......sometimes with half a cap of dettol.

You'll have to cut down on the dettol a bit then Parky, if you go onto get one of the new generation washing machines spoken of in the Yahoo press today then! They use but a cupful of water or so per wash!

lol. a new generation washing machine would be me trampling the clothes in the bath.

Or like that old great Bushtucker Man episode from the original series, where he showed us all how to make an improvised bush wash-agitator to wash his clothes in a bucket! It was a sort of a stick with old tin can bits on it I think, that he pushed up and down in the water! It damned well seemed to work too as well.
