Reasonably Light Rucksacks

Thanks to your advice on a previous thread i now have a Terra Nova Superlite Voyager which i'm delighted with it.

I now want to get a better rucksack around the 50l size as i find the Go Lite Jam 2 that i presently have uncomfortable lacking enough hip support and the chest strap is too short, or maybe i'm too big.

I realise that comfort comes with a weight penalty and something weighing around 1-1.5kg would be ideal.

I'm hoping to have a look at a couple of Lowe Alpine models tomorrow. the Mountain Attack and the Airzone Centro (any Good?) and additional suggestions would be appreciated.

 Many Thanks, Calum

OMM Mountain Movers 55+10 is a very comfortable sack in the weight range your looking for, and can be stripped down to about half the weight for trips away from camp. Only problems are that it comes in just one back length, so you need to try it on, and it's not that widely available. But a great sack and very tough, cos it's made of Dyneema.

The new Lightwave packs will be available soon at Spikeoutdoors. They have a 50ltr.

Crux AK47 - this comfortable and hard as nails - various back sizes.

weighs around 1kg - kevlar weave etc etc...

Before you buy a new pack Calum, try packing your Jam differently. Frameless packs need more thought when packing. Try placing tent poles at the sides to transfer the weight to your hips. Pack the outer and inner of the tent in their own stuff sacks. Shoving a big tent in one stuff sack into a frameless pack is almost guarranteed to make it uncomfortable.

The Crux and Lightwave suggestions are good, as is the OMM if it fits.

The Haglofs LIM 45 and  LIM 55 are light at just over a kilo for a pack with an internal frame, and will carry weight well. The back is adjustable too so a good fit should be possible.

Perhaps a little heavy for you but my own favourite is the POD Black Ice, around 1.6kg for 47 (size 2 back) or 53 litres (size 3) - it's also kevlar fabric, totally bombproof construction, and will carry serious weight when it has to (although of course you don't have to! )

No experience of the Crux/Lightwave though they do sound good and if i was in the market they'd be amongst those I'd try. The Granite Gear Vapor Trail is the comfiest pack I've ever had on with weights up to about 30 - 35 pounds and goes from about 50 to 60 litres with the collar extension.

Useful huge open stretch side pockets and sturdy compression straps over the front of the pack to which you can lash wet waterproofs or flysheet.

Comes in a range of back sizes so you should be able to get one to fit well without the weight penalty of an adjustable back system.

Comes in at around a kilo. There may be a durability issue as low-ish weight achieved with light-ish fabrics but I haven't had any problems with mine.

Agree with Mike though, although aware that some just don't get on with the golite frameless packs. The Jam is a good pack if packed well and with a sleep mat of some description either unrolled inside to form a more rigid 'tube' to pack into or folded against the back to offer a bit of semi rigid support.

Can be done either with a closed cell or a mostly deflated thermarest type mat. Of course, if it doesn't fit - it doesn't fit, but could be worth a go before making the change.

At 1380g in the large size the Osprey Atmos 50 is well worth considering.  I find it so so comfortable, a great bit of kit.

Many thanks to you all for the replies, and i ended up getting a Berghaus Freeflow 50ltr.

My choice of sacks was limited in Inverness and i didn't want to buy mail order without trying it on. I thought the Osprey Atmos 50 was an excellent fit and felt as comfortable as the Freeflow but i couldn't justify the extra £50 for 250g. I also tried a Crux ak47 but found it to be too short.

I should also add that i tried countless loading formulas with the Jam 2 some of which did help but i still found it uncomfortable.

 Thanks again, Calum
