Hi guys little bit of advice needed i'm after a new sac that can be used as an allrounder for haulin climbin gear or takin hiking/camping. At the mo i have a karrimor elite alpinist 45+10 its a great sac and am sure it will outlive me but it weighs a ton, so looking for something the same size but lighter any ideas?? I've seen the omm villain which looks perfect but is a little pricey for me any alternatives out there??

give us a price range if thats a key factor i would recommend omm bags thought light fairly tough and very well designed you might wanna look at the alpine berghaus sac, POD (black ice? cragsac?) or the crux AK series

Not much on field and trek thats 40-50l. The vaude mountain looks good and so does the black diamond one. anyone know of anywhere near sheffield that stocks these or the omm villain think it'll just come down to fit really and what ever cash i can scrape together.

The berghaus arete 45 is quite a good sack tough and usable and not too heavy.

The OMM Villain 45L sack gets my vote. Very much £99 well spent when I did the WHW. They're great bags and I have the 10L version too.

Am really temted by the villain it looks great and love the idea of being able to strip it down. The Vaude Expodition Rock looks good too for the price. Can anyone find a pic for this in the other colour (not orange/red) can't find one anywhere

I'm not sure how many people actually bother to strip down modular sacs. I sometimes think it's a great selling point, but something that in most real world use doesn't happen often. Maybe in an expedition scenario when you're hauling stuff in then want to strip right down for a summit attempt.

As an aside, Backpackinglight have just advised they appear to be having increased delays in sourcing OMM 'sacks right now. I was checking to see when they were likely to get the 4L model back in stock and they think it may even be the end of July - I notice the Climbers Shop in Ambleside is out of stock on that model too.

Wouldn't have thought it ideal for hauling climbing gear though, in spite of the name. Edit:> Whoa back! I might be wrong there. The new version looks really interesting.

fairly good i reckon msc (mesh thing on back) holds helmet have gear loops iirc(mountain mover does) for gear from rack obligatory ice axe loops even got little pockets on the waist band for camera/energy bars/buff v. useful what else does one need short of a rope storage system? Edit:>opps missed your edit before i posted

The berghaus arete 45 is quite a good sack tough and usable and not too heavy. Another vote here for this bag, is everything DW says and its major selling point is its mucho cheapo!!
If I ever replace mine I'll be looking at the OMM villain tho.

As mentioned, the Arete is a pretty good bag, and not too heavy (mine's 1355g). I find it a very comfortable fit, but that's not a lot of use, as fit is personal... I got mine for £45, but I've seen them on sale for silly money (£30); last August, unfortunately...

 |
And another vote for the Arete 45, i've got an omm chest pouch fitted to mine with Alpkit clippers, very useful

Looks like th arete 45 is the winner at 40-45 quid i can't say no unless a bit of extra cash drops my way then it will deffinatly be the villain. Thax for all the input guys

Glad to see you are faster at such decisions on kit than I am; I can hang on for weeks sometimes still debating the finer points of which to buy! I am sure that a 45L sack will do you fine for most situations though for sure.
