I am a very keen venture scout and have done quite a bit of walking in the UK and once in the french alps. I want to be able to go on a recommended course that will enable me to have some qualification in order to take small groups in to the hills. As i am a student value for money plays a big part in the course i choose any ideas.

If its to take members of the Scout Association into the hills, then speak to your DC (or ADC Leader Training)about Form M training and assessment.
If its for non scout members, then the MLTB would be the first logical step I reckon.

When you say 'student' do you mean a REAL student (i.e. at Uni), or a sixth form pupil? Your answer will change what advice I can offer you. Lots of pupils call themselves students these days even though the term is strictly applied to undergrads only. Confusing.

thanks for your help Simon. Jeannie i am going off to uni this summer after my A level exams.

The other thing you might try is to join your University Officer Training corps (OTC) you may be able to do a course through them you get paid as well!!
Or Join your Uni walking club if they have one, they may be able to help,

Right Chris - I'm in from work now. My advice is similar to Dave's - he beat me to it! At the Uni Freshers' Fair, join the Uni Hiking Society; go to the meetings and on the walks, express a desire to learn to lead and wait for them to pay for you to do to do a BELA or WGL award. Easy and free.
The ML award is way out of your budget - see the prices quoted on the MLTB thread next to this one....
For anyone still at school, BTW, we often ask the Gold Award holders who have had their 18th birthdays to help out on Silver/Bronze expeds as an extra 'responsible adult'.

Jeannie C when you say "real Student as in Uni" do you the mean the lazy tax dodging variety??
As far as training goes you can always try the Basic Expedition Leaders Award run by the Sports Trust, try your local youth service or DoE Award office for details. The Bela is a good basi training course which you could use as an experience gaining exercise.

They don't just dodge tax, they dodge soap and work too...
|
 |
Uh oh. I'm going to take cover as I can see trouble coming.
;)

Many of us either have been students or are students......and I worked and paid tax while I was a student. Sometimes I washed.... ;0)
|
 |
I myself will me starting a Ba Youth and community in October but now however have a few doubts, Washing??? Nothing about washing in the course notes may have to reconsider... On second thoughts Can you get a grant for toiletries?
|
 |
 err nope!
I hate it that I have earnt enough in the last tax year to be paying income tax :( its so not fair. esp as I don't get any grant from Local AUthority for my fees I have to pay the full 1100 quid and I only get the non means tested bit of the loan but yet I am broke almost.

Many thanks all of you for all responses

chris you say your a venture just wanted to know if your awar of explorers which is replacing it and if you know of your local group cos I am a explorer leader and it seems few people know about it
|
 |
Yes Jon I am now an "Explorer" but I don't use that as people outside scouting don't normally have a clue of what I am going on about. You go in to a shop and ask if they do discounts for "Explorers" they will laugh at you and say what are they. I really don't see the need to change a well-known name. Are group filled in the questionnaires regarding the changes and everything we answered we would not liked changed seemed to get changed. With new laws etc it's become very hard and expensive for scout groups in general to operate. I can't do half the stuff I could have done 3/4 years ago. I really enjoy explorers and think that nothing need not have changed. We have been on some great camps and have great evenings

yeah I got involed in explorers having missed vebntures I did the army cadet route then kidna pissed about 6 years doing bugger all really. cant discuss too much on here but if you wnat to e mail me feeel free

If your an explorer you are to young to do any formall award schemes yet, you need to be 18, however speak to your District mountain advisor, he may be able to use a new instructor on his team and when you are 18 your district may then offer support with training. I am a scout leader and help my District mountain team out. I am currently doining my ML at Yr Hafod and the cost is £150, of which my District and group are contributing towards. Other members of our team are doing a course at Great Tower in the Lakes through Lancashire Scouts I believe costing less.

Erm... David... that's probably because your parents are rich, and are expected to pay a certain amount towards your living at Uni, whereas my parents aren'ts, I get the full £4k means tested loan. I don't think there are any grants at all are there (with the exception of hardship funds)?

i'm a venture (sorry, explorer) in west lancs - we do run heavily subsidised WGLA, SPA and ML training courses and assessments - mainly at GT by windermere, but possibly other venues.
http://www.mountain.westlancashirescouts.org.uk/docs/2003flyr.doc
to quote: These courses are offered to Leaders from other voluntary youth organisations in Lancashire, and nationally to members of the Scout Movement. We also welcome non-Scouting participants.
