I just tried making a lightweight hammock, and camping in it. Granted, the weather was kind, but I got a good night's sleep.

Will be adding a bug net, and fly soon - but even with these, the whole lot should fit in a Hovis small loaf bag, and weigh about 1.5 pounds.

Anyone else tried this in the UK? The main prob is finding trees! But you can camp on a steep slope, so there are many more places to camp than with a tent. The main problem is staying warm, but I think I have that licked.

BTW, the fabric and rope cost £9 - a bit cheaper than a new bivi bag!

I'm looking to give my new hammock a try soon (when the weather gets abit warmer). The only problem is deciding where to go.
Alastair, do you have any ideas on good places to camp in a hammock?

I've hear quite a few people use a thrmarest and seems to work fine. When I finally give my hammock a go I'll be using my thermarest to keep me warm

A lot of the Hammock Hangers on the Hiking Forums in the States recommend using one of those folding Silver Reflective Sunshields you can buy for a couple of quid for your car windscreen in the summer at the likes of Motorworld and Halfords. Lie on the Reflective side with the other side facing the the bottom of the hammock.

I've camped in my Hennessey Hammock in Sub Zero temperatures and a closed cell foam mat has been adequate.
