Am looking for a backpacking tent for two plus labrador (who is NOT allowed in the inner...). I already have a Nallo 2 (brilliant tent).
We shall not do much dog-packing, so something bigger like the Nallo 3 or 3 GT would be more versatile and justifiable than the Nallo 2 GT. The Laserlarge 3 is about the same weight as the Nallo 2, but it would be a lot of dosh for the occasional dog-trip with little other benefit. Wondering if the Nallo 3 (not the GT) would have sufficient space in the porch for dog and cooking? I suspect it's too small. The 3 GT is getting heavier for the two of us to lug around. And then there's the Kaitums - but the 3 is heavier again than the Nallo 3 GT...
Any comments on the Laserlarge 3? Does the fly on the porch go down to the ground like the Hillebergs, thus keeping wind off the dog? Is the tent reasonably stable? It would be the lightest solution to the problem - and I suppose we could use it for cycle touring, too.
ive just got a laserlarge and when i pitched it in the garden the other day the fly goes down to the ground so it should be fine for your dog.
i dont think the LL porch openings are as flexible as the nallo 2 GT that my mate has but ive not really had chance to test the tent properly yet.
its probably as stable as the nallo as its a very similar design, i too looked at all the tents you mention but in the end it came down to budget for now and i got a great deal on the LL so that made my mind up.
Rob, one possibility would be just to but a flysheet and front pole of the Nallo 2 GT: still not cheap, but that would save you money over a whole new tent, at least as I think the inners are the same.
We have a Kaitum 3, and no regrets at all. Yes, it weighs more than a Nallo GT but you do get a lot more space in the inner. There's full height through the inner as well as the whole thing being wider (1.85 at the widest for the k3, against 1.60 for the n3gt). With the double ended design you also get better through-venting and more convenience, and with porch space end the dog can stay separate to the kitchen etc. And we use it cycle touring for the two of us so it's not too heavy to be useful (3 Kg), and there's just sooooo much room!
A k2 would still give you quite a bit more space than your Nallo thanks to the wider inner, full height and extra porch. But having looked at one we reckon the extra 300g is worth extra Palace Points for the 3 man.
Many thanks all. PC - hadn't thought of the idea of a fly and pole - like it. And I have, actually, got a spare pole already, assuming it's the same length as the Nallo 2's shorter one, so it would just be the fly.
And Moggy - thanks, too, for your earlier private message - useful.
Nallo flysheets are expensive - I have a 2GT and thought a 2 flysheet would be a nice bonus to add flexibility - turned out to be half the price of an entire tent! Still think its a good idea tho especially of you have the poles and are happy with the rest!
well its smaller than the GT fly, doesnt have as many seams to sew, doesnt come with poles. I would have thought 1/3 the cost of an entire GT would be reasonable
