Hi  folks.

I am sure this has been asked before , so I am sorry for going over old ground.

I am 6'3" and very broad and a little to rounder than I should be so am finding difficulty in finding good fitting sacks. I have tried a few karrimors over the years but found them not really to comfy as the back length always seems a little short.

I would like a 35-40 litre day sack from a company that either does adjustable back systems or a choice of sizes. I would prefer robust materials rather than light weight. I have a dislike of bright and shiny gear so subdued colours is a must. I know it may seem large for a day sack but I have to carry my 8 year olds gear too. Cant wait until he is a bit older and can carry my gear

I find it difficult to try out stuff as not to much choice of shops where I live on Isle of Wight so will look when on mainland next with hopefully plenty of good advice.

I would be grateful for any suggestion you can offer.

Cheers Andy

Andy,

given your spec (robust, subdued, long back version) I'd say you're in the market for a Crux AK47. It's slightly larger than your stated volume; but compresses well and is extremely light for this capacity. The extra space can make things easier when you're the senior load carrier!

That's a very 'climber specific' pack that works for hiking & trekking too; but there are plenty of companies making walkers packs with varying back lengths. You'll get plenty of other options listed soon, but as a Crux owner myself I'd suggest you take a look there first.

John

Thank you for the welcome and the suggestion. The Crux packs look interesting. I will have to have a closer look at them.

Hi Andy. My brother had a similar query at Christmas. He's not as tall as you but has a very long back and most normal daysacks looked completely stupid on him and were very uncomfortable. We ended up getting him a Deuter daypack; I can't remember which one, but the back-length was clearly longer than loads of others. Deuter are robust, so tick that box for you too. Not sure about the colours available in men's models though (the ladies' Deuter backpacking sack I got last autumn is an excitingly bright orangey-yellow!!)

Try some of the military surplus places for ex-Norwegian army ones......I was looking at some packs (a while ago for sure) and the medium was huge on me (6 foot....medium/slimmish) even when I had all the straps up tight - explanation was that Norwegian soldiers tend to be big lads....

Hang on, if you're trying Karrimor packs on then no wonder you cannot get a good fit!Apart from a select few of the bigger sacks in their range, and the military lines, there are no good daysacs done by them anymore, as Karrimor is not now the good old trusty company brand of quality manufacture of old, that it once was, sadly!

Maybe try one of the older style bigger daysac packs like a Berghaus Cyclops Roc maybe.

I always liked the Karrimor SF sacks but have just sold a Sabre 45 as back to short. I didn't really want anything bigger than 40 litres and have tried several military packs but all seem to have very little adjustment regarding back length. Think I wil give military stuff a miss for a change.

Thank you Kate for the Deuter recommendation. I must be honest I never heard of them before but they look very nice indeed. Typical though the one I like in black (futura 34) seems to be for the ladies only .

Cheers Andy

Hi Andrew have a look at a few of the packs from macpac i am 6ft 3 and 18 stone and find their size 3 packs fit me perfectly the one i currently use is their tekapo 35+ and although not the lightest of sacks seems to be very solidly built. So there you go just another idea to be going on with.

Osprey do their Atmos 35L in s,m,l. Not cheap. Still, I have a long back and the large is the best fitting and most comfortable pack of this size I have ever had.

Just a quick one to say thanks for all the advice. I settled on a Deuter Futura 32 and took a chance and bought it online. Used it today and took a long walk over local downs. A lovely little pack when set up properly. appears very well made. Just fits my long back and is very comfortable, so much so I am consigering one of their larger packs for weekends away . Thanks to all again.

Cheers Andy
