So I was thumbing through a catalogue from a French shop near where I live; they sell all sorts from nice wooden toys for kids to overpriced & rather gimmicky outdoors stuff that usually makes me chuckle. Very nice staff, though, so we often wander in and have a moment looking around.

Anyway, what did I find in their catalogue but this:

For 12 Euros a 13.5g tripod heater that runs on solid fuel blocks. I've been known to use hexamine in the past and this thing has me wondering if it could be any use. Obviously you're not going to be able to heat much volume of liquid, but perhaps enough for a quick brew or to rehydrate a meal?

Looking closely at the other products from Ti-time, I'm wondering if they aren't alpkit's supplier? Certainly very close in design...

Either way, the price is tempting just for the fun of trying it out. Has anyone seen or used these and can offer an opinion? I think I'll go down there and have a proper look...

Far too heavy. Better with a 7g one.

Alpkits Titanium (and most others) gear is from Tibetan. Don't know if this is the same company or not.

SW,

that makes sense... RRP £10 is roughly what I'd expect to translate to 11.95 Euros. But Bob has it cheaper! And I can read about what he makes of it... Thanks...

Mike. With the amount of hot air you generate I'm surprised you need a stove at all...

So...

being less rude,

have you tried one?

I'm curious to know whether it might be feasible to get a meal cooked with one of these. I suspect you'd have to keep feeding it hexi blocks which might be an inefficient way of getting something hot.

I've got the Gram Cracker one i highlited John. I haven't used it though. I intend to use it as an emergency 'back-up'.

Loads of folk use esbit stoves on BPL.com. The tablets weigh 14g, and i'm sure i read that either 1/2 a tablet, or was it 1 tablet,  boiled 2 US cups. I think that's 400 something ml's. I wouldn't want to do anything other than boil water though.

I have used hexamine and the classic mess tin to cook all sorts; generally cremated remains by the time I got to eating it! Bringing water to the boil is about all they are really suited to... but 400ml would be about enough to rehydrate 200g of couscous for example; that's around 800kcal which would constitute a (light!) meal in my book...

Mike,

1 (U.S.)cup = 8fl.oz = 235ml                so 2 cups = 470ml

1 (U.S.) fl.oz  = 30ml.
