Anybody know of a mountain bike maintenance book for the mechanically inept? I mean one that tells you how to do the most basic stuff in easy to follow language, preferably with similarly straightforward diagrams. Many I've looked at seem to assume an existing level of knowledge I don't have, and the instructions that came with the bike (a Giant Terrago) might as well have been in Swahili -- in fact I think some bits were.

Cheers all.

I've got a Mel Allwood book.. called something like "Pocket mountain bike maintenance". Lots of photos and clear explanations.

Ideal for the less evolved like myself.

Another vote for the Zinn. (But then I haven't tried the others.)

Don't take this the wrong way Guy, but if you've got no aptitude for mechanical things I don't think a book will help much. A cycle maintenance course would be a much better idea IMO.

Nice bike BTW. It seems to be available for about £380 and comes with hydraulic disc brakes and some Deore bits. Bit of a bargain.

The Park tools website has good guides for basic maintenance tasks, and of course there is always the maintenance section on bikemagic, where you could also ask for advice on the forum.

I have never found any book particularly good.

Yeah the haynes manuals are goood, they do manuals for all the cars and they are used everywhere, however i would tend to look on places like eBay first as, Halfords and other high street shops tend to rip you off.

But yeahh i  agree with Steve I, Bike maintenance courses teacch you a lot and they dont cost too much to go.... better to have hands on experience IMO.

Good luck with it all.

Regards

John
