Just thought I'd start a thread to open up discussion and find out what other peoples opions are, on asking the powers that be about starting a new Forum Topic about Making Your Own Gear or MYOG for short. I've noticed that making and tweaking gear has gradually been on the increase in the UK for some time, to some extent following the US, but perhaps also because of the credit crunch or folks's desire to have bespoke gear. A whole host of idea's including pot cosy's, stoves, cooking systems, tent enhancements, tarps, backpacks and even complete tents have all been discussed and debated on here. The problem is, that a lot of great idea's get lost within the general bulging Gear Forum Topic or are discussed in related threads and so make it very hard to track down, even with the updated search function. And whilst the US forums like BPL.com are good, I thought it might be more helpful to OM members to have more UK biased discussions with regards to weather conditions, shops and products etc. Of course, some people may think there are already to many Forum Topics and leave as is (although a couple are rather underused now).

You'll only get CP confusing the hell out of us all as usual with his ridiculous scientific application to such things!
It's all right, John Burley or Pete Clinch would come along and explain it for you... If we did get such a topic going, could we go back and shuffle all the useful threads into it...?
Yeah count me in, I want to make an Ultralight no frills pack with a lightweight ext frame. Maybe even a new lighter fly for my ageing Phreeranger.

I 'spose there is no reason why we just couldn't copy or link to all the useful stuff that has gone before.

Not having the ability to MYOG, I still love seeing what everyone else is thinking and making, (seeing CP's stove at the outdoor show)then saying, "why didn't I think of that?" Great ideas for us beginner to see

Mike, priceless as that was, I think you've got the wrong DIY site.

good idea. I'll sign the petition. I'm always fiddling wi' kit. How do you dehydrate a watermelon?
Mike - Following Mike's comment I won't ask you why you want to make the watermelon drier.

Rocky - It would be a good idea for a new topic, but you would also need to have a section where others can buy the output off the inputters in case they can't or won't. Count me in. Also, it might be useful for a list of types and sources of materials used would be useful. I am sure there are plenty out there who see a very interesting thread on the making of tin can based thingumyjigs only to find they cannot source the right sized tin cans or foil needed. Thinking of those posts about making a stove and pan set out of Japanese beer cans. I am sure people like CP and Rocky have their own secret suppliers. In the interest of the sharing principle of this potential new thread these things might be useful to share.
Hi TTG. I hear what you say about not being able to source the right equipment, don't have any secret suppliers myself. That was one of the reasons I thought it might be a good idea to have a seperate topic on here, so that people can share this kind of info for suppliers and products in the UK. For instance, there might be a UK firm that imports those big Japanese beers cans.
