Hey, im looking to buy a digitial camera for under around £100. I know im not gonna get anything amazing for that price, i just want a decent one (my old camera and phone camera are both grainy) that i can take up into the hills and use when travelling. Im not too particular about megapixels and zoom, because from what ive looked at, its gonna be a large step up from what im using now.
Any recommendations for specific cameras, or any tips on what to look for when buying one would be greatly appreciated
Really depends what you're looking for. The Canon Powershot A470 is a great camera, with a good screen to look through. It has a basic zoom and some different modes for different types of shooting. It is a wee bit bulky (relatively speaking) so you could prob find a smaller one. I just looked on amazon and it's around £65. The A480 has just replaced it with a higher megapixel count (though a slightly lower zoom) and better processing technology (£100). If you get the A470, you could always get a waterproof case for it and still be under £100! Got this for my sister and she rates it - for a basic point and shoot cam with good quality images. Just FYI, each manufacturer manages to produce different quality cameras even within ranges, so it's the camera you're looking for not just a brand. Hope that helps.
Thanks, a really useful post! Ive had a look at the Canon Powershot range, and they seem like quality cameras for the price. Im more than happy to sacrifice a bit of size/weight in order to get more for my money.
Looking at a few of the Powershots, i like the look of the A580. Seems to be the best camera i can get for less than £100!
HI, i have had a couple off a guy on ebay, excellent, they are New and refurbs, but you honestly wouldn't know, they are sealed from the manufacturer, pristine here the link
You can't go really far wrong with any of the main brand budget cameras these days. Just avoid silly ebay chinese cheap cameras with no branding and massive megapixel counts as they are completely rubbish. Don't get overawed with mp count.....my 6mp canon takes far better photos than my friends 14mp samsung and he even admits that! The majority of his pixels are just noise
I'd avoid the cheap nice looking Samsung models as the sensors and lens are poor. Also avoid Ricoh, kodak and nikon (not there slr's though, there great). The safe bet is with a Canon as there is pretty much no such thing as a "bad" canon camera there just sometimes not the best is size/value. If you can afford it the Panasonic LX and TZ series are marginally better and have awesome wide angle and zooms.
I have an Olympus 790 waterproof and drop proof camera (As seen in TV advert with kid and dog), excellent camera and I don't have to worry about being too gentle with it whilst out and about. Takes excellent pics and 7.1Mp
The better 850 model is available online for < £120!
Thanks for all the help guys. I ended up getting a refurbished Canon A590IS off the canon outlet ebay store for £75 delivered! Won the auction yesterday morning, and the camera arrived a few hours ago. Just had a play with it and it is miles ahead of my old camera and my phone camera, looking forward to testing it out properly now!
