Clicky Is it the perfect backpacking camera for photo enthusiasts? I might be ebaying all of my SLR kit very soon...

I've looked at it myself but the lack of EVF and the fact that it's only 80g approx lighter (not including batteries) than an E-410/420 when both are fitted with their respective 14-45 lenses rules it out for me as there's a fair loss of useability. I'd prefer the Panasonic G1 even if it is in fact heavier than the E-410/420. I'm guessing that the G1 will fit any pouch that the EP-1 will fit. ADC Digital cameras are selling the G1 + 14-45 OIS lens at £479. See Here

..."I'm guessing that the G1 will fit any pouch that the EP-1 will fit." hmm, going to have to disagree with that statement.

The pics below show the Panasonic GH-1 which has a taller 'Prism Hump' than the G- 1 and is fitted with the 14-150 lens with hood attached rather than the 14-42. Unless you used a custom fitted case for the EP-1 IMO the G-1 would fit.

I doubt the Olympus would go into it's case with the lens fully extended though (as in the pic)?

Interesting point about the weight. I instantly compared it to my E510 / E1 but I suppose an E4x0 would be a closer contender. I'm mostly interested in the dimensions. The thought of fitting it into the pocket of a shell jacket like a point and shoot seems almost unreal. With the 17mm lens its not much bigger than the LX3. D

With the 17mm it makes a difference, I didn't check the E-410 with the E-System 17mm, weight should be pretty good but it'll be bigger. I'll wait and see what comes next, they're implying that the EP-1 is a mid range model so the next one up should have an EVF. I hope it's something like the shape of a Voigtlander Bessa R2A/3A or Olympus RC/RD/SP, anything that doesn't look like a DSLR but still has an EVF really. Still think the G-1 is a really nice camera, if I had the cash to spare I'd be very tempted.

No I guess you're right but the EP-1 lens is 62mm dia x 43.5mm and the Panasonic 14-45 is 60mm dia x 60mm. So 16mm difference in the lens and 10mm in the body depth, overall 26mm, say an inch. Like I say unless it's a fitted case I think there would be little difference in size once you'd put them in a belt pouch. Of course you'd need to try them to say for certain.

I want a compact like my old Rollei 35, but with a full-frame sensor.

btw, what is the conversion rate for the lenses for the olympus? Is it 2.0 as the E-520? Therefore the 14-42 in actual full sensor terms is 28-84?? and people mentioning lack of EVF? is there a normal viewfinder?
|
 |
No, but there is an optical viewfinder available as an add on.

No, but there is an optical viewfinder available as an add on. but it only works with the 17mm lens and as it fits in the hotshoe it prevents you using an external flash.
