Hi all, Just had confirmation from PHD that they should have their lightweight down pants on the PHD website by the end of September! Nodrog.

Hi Nodrog, Did PHD give you any specs as to the weight and the construction of the pants. Cheers, Stephen
Hi Stephen, No, but, they are going to be in the same build as the Minimus stuff - very light. I think they will be called Minimus pants. I rang PHD on friday and they should be up on the website tommorow. They've said they will be able to get them to me in time for my trip to Nepal in a few weeks, so they are going to be well tested. Cheers. Nodrog.

Good stuff Nodrog, From what you are saying they will probaly be something similar to the Montbel UL down pants. Cheers, Stephen

Is there any way we could stop calling them 'down pants', which summons up some obscene fetishistic notion (see discussion on 'chaps/leggings'), and call them 'trousers' instead? 'Pants' is an americanism , and we're not in America.

 Nay bothers Kish

Interesting Kish, Will PHD call them pants or trousers? I think it will be trousers, not pants. BUT...................... the idea of some obscene fetishistic notion has its appeal! BTW, what can you do that meets this notion on a freezing cold night? Nodrog.

Well the pictures do make the PHD ones look a fair bit loftier - but thats perhaps not an especially crucial decision factor here. Either option is very warm as legwear goes Still PHDs are of course trousers not pants Lightweight down boots well established of course but I wonder if these count as the first down socks? Not even a sole unit it seems.

No, Sea to Summit have produced a down sock for some time... very nice too

Well those ones are no doubt very nice but I suspect get disqualified for having removable insoles Not that those aren't a useful feature much of the time of course! The sea to summit ones look like it though Actually Valendre seem to do some very nice relatively basic looking booties too, A bit heavier/warmer I suspect.
Ah, but the removable insoles are in the 'overboot', Martin. You can leave the overboot at home and just bring the inners. The overboot makes a good year-round camp shoe.
Ok Seems a very sensible set up that actually.
Just ordered the trousers! They are Minimus gear.................. that says it all! Can't wait to use them later this month. Nodrog.

Looking forward to seeing their quilts that someone mentioned.

Hmm, PHD-kit-whore though I am, I remain on balance un-tempted by either the down trousers or socks. I can't help feeling that unless you really, really feel the cold, then a non-down alternative, such as Powerstretch leggings or Paramo stretch trousers, could be as effective and possibly more versatile. And certainly cheaper. And I wear socks in my down bag because my feet tend to push against the end and flatten the loft. I can't see how the same won't happen to the sock as well as the bag. A wool sock doesn't compress the same, and nor does a fibre-pile sock - which can also be used to help dry your walking socks on your feet. That said, I've occasionally be tempted by those Feathered Friends down booties . Mike, how do the US sizes translate to UK or European?
