I just received one in small, my usual size, and find that the fit is quite loose compared to what I'm used to from a base layer, which is skin tight like a helly hansen or similar.

I'm not sure I like the loose fit - in my experience it leads to rucks under the arms and rubbing.

Is the dragonfly meant to fit like this, or should I risk returning it for an XS, which will probably be short in the sleeve?

I assume the fabric in it stretches a bit? If so then yes should logically be quite tight fitting otherwise needs to be a little loser of course.

To be honest it sounds like the cut probably doesn't fit you very well - I'd investigate alternatives

Isn't the Dragonfly a light mid layer rather than base?  In which case it would be sized to fit over a base layer.

I always assumed that it was a midlayer but in a recent issue of Trail, it was included in a review of base layer tops.  Trail gave it best buy for what it's worth, which is not much to be honest, as there were no merino garments included in the review.

A base layer should definitely not be loose-fitting so go down a size if you are convinced that the Dragonfly is for you.

Now lets be fair to Trail   I'm pretty sure they had some merino in there and that it did well too. (Icebreaker and Lundhags iirc?). Actually seemed pleasantly well organised by their standards.

(I'm much less confident about say the pending waterproof test - the categories in that were a total mess last time round ).

Montanes website has it as a base layer. They do also have a powerdry fleece style thing.

jake, that's exactly why I went for it - and yes it certainly has the fit of a light mid-layer rather than a base layer

I've never been XS in anything before!

I was also confused, as MC says, that they dismissed  merino in the BL product test

of course I ordered it from sportsshoes.com, which means that you lose the rip-off £5 delivery charge every time you return something

grrrrr

having just tried it on again - the problem is the cut not the size.

it's just not cut like a base layer: the bagginess around the upper arm being the main thing. But all over it is cut loose.

OK, my fault for ordering blind online - but I do think the phrase 'base layer' should be reserved for garments which are designed to hug the skin.

Seems likely - if you look at the pictures for the female equivalent on Montanes website it seems to be fitting nicely enough as a base layer on a real person. Obviously fitted the trail person OK too

iirc from trying one on myself sometime it was fine on the body but the sleeve length was rather too short.

Perhaps the fabric used isn't as stretchy - and hence flexible across body shapes - as some? There are of course some basically non stretch base layers like those Paramo pull ons. Those review well but do of course have to fit in the first place.

(ditto pertex/pile and stuff actually.).

no honestly parky, I have accounted for that

the sleeves are baggy: you would have to be 5'7" with the arms of a sumo wrestler for this to fit like a base layer

I know different brands fit slightly differently but this is just not a skin-hugging cut, by any stretch of a description - shoulders are in the right place, sleeves are the right length, it's just cut like a mid-layer.

I'm 5'7", 38" chest and 150lbs - i.e. very average, 'normal' shape.

bumping this thread

- anyone else got one of these or tried one on? - any comments

Cotswold doing them for £25 at the moment - I'm considering it - probably a medium - but I have a similar build to 'Mr Muscle'

Tried them on today after work. (Moorland Rambler sale)

Yep!

Medium - fits my chest but arms 3" too short! Body short too.

Large OK - a bit loose on the body, but the arms - wow - I would need serious 'Bingo wings' fill the underside  of the upper sleeves!

Bought a Montane Balance instead - it would have been rude not to
