Hi all,

I am looking to buy a new jacket for the upcoming winter season(hopefully as good as last years) and I have been looking at a few.

The ones that have caught my eye are the above on the recommendation of an out door shop in inverness, the ME kongur MRT GTX Pro, Berghaus yara peak and TNF Mountain Guide jacket....

I have tried them all on and I like them all but has anyone had any experience of them....

I had never really thought about the paramo smock until yesterday and I do like it but Im not sure how it will stand up for the winter season....

I want to be able to use it for winter walking, climbing, biking and all the rest inbetween. Preferably pretty light but able to withstand the weather....ohh and I run a little hot thats whats holding me back with the paramo at the moment...

the name of the paramo should give you a pointer ryan. not recommended for climbing nor i would posit as a full on winter top.

for that the aspira smock is a better bet. the paramo smocks will replace a shell AND midlayer so you should consider this when letting weight cloud your judgement. you also wear it all the time.

there is always "fit for purpose" when buying something and also what many forget, "purpose for which it is fit".

thanks for that. I am only going on some information I was giving in an outdoor shop that said it would be able to deal with a scottish winter climbing season. I did have a look at it though and tried it on and although nice I was a bit dubious about the thickness of the outer layer and how easily it would rip.

It's not a Scottish winter that'll cause it to rip, more it coming in contact with hard and sharp objects - this can happen regardless of season or location

So I qualify myself saying I've not done scottish winter climbing, I don't know the circumstances of that, but I have put on in a shop all the Paramo jackets and I've done a lot of Lakes hiking in all seasons with a Velez and done a lot of cycling in my Velez, so you will get some advice, but not all from experience.

The Velez has a chest zip and side-vents plus arms which velcro above the elbow, and the pump-liner does a good job if rain comes in through the neck area, if you have a wicking layer underneath, to dry you out. You can open up quite a bit.

The Velez is good for all outdoor situations in cool weather. Each person has a different upper threshold, mine I found was around 13C. The shortness of the jacket only calls for appropriate trousers, e.g. cascada.

The high chest pocket means if you're raising your legs high up, there isn't much weight to lift around the lower part, so its good for climbing or cycling. Folks who simply walk don't tend to notice length as much hence Aspira, Cascada, etc jackets.

The Velez's side-vents make it good to use with a backpack, because you pass the straps through the side-vents and buckle inside, so you get good traction on your hip bones without riding up the jacket.

I never sensed any coolness of the Velez vs the other jackets, I think they are all the same thickness/insulation, and to be honest you'd want good waterproof trousers regardless of the jacket, apart from those fringe like showers you'd want some thigh protection and not put on the trousers.

I'd say the Velez fully zipped-up takes you with a thin baselayer to say around the 2c-5c lower limit, below that you need to be active (moving) or add something underneath, or something ontop. I did walk around Chicago onces in strong winds at -20c and I'd say the Velez would be good with fleece underneath and a belay ontop (e.g. Torres gilet).

The long-term wear of the new thinner material, time will tell! However, Paramo is more repairable than other makes, the outer layer is not your waterproof layer, and they are good on warranty repairs. You are more likely to suffer from loss of breathability or waterproof from the other jacket's fabrics like eVent, Goretex, etc. i.e. you are more likely to get the most value in terms of winters used from Paramo Analogy than any other waterproof layer.

I'm not sure I'd agree there. I might be a little wary of climbing in mine (not that I do winter climbing), but then again is the outer fabric going to be any less robust than say the flavours of pertex that adorn many Buffalo and other pertex/pile tops, and winter climbing is one of the mainstays of that market? And as Nigel points out it should be easily repairable.

But as for overall protection I reckon the Velez Adventure Light should cut the mustard. Having used an Aspira Smock for 10 years now, I'm seriously considering switching to my VAL for things like Norwegian winter ski touring - I reckon the hood is certainly good enough. Snow can be abrasive stuff and I wouldn't want to trash it, but I'm hoping I'm generally good enough not to fall over too often!

i agree matt but paramo do not suggest this as a top for the intended use. if it's used this way and works then that's fine but they have more appropriate jackets for the intended use - at least according to paramo.

as none of the tops suggested by ryan are exactly cheap, perhaps looking at the choices available would be the best line to tread.

Thanks for all the replies.

Glyn I may have written that bit wrong or it but I didn't mean the conditions to rip it more contact with rock and other rough surfaces.

I am going to take a closer look at the jackets I have listed because as parky again has stated there not exactly the cheapest.

Has anyone had any dealings with the berghaus or north face jackets?

The North Face one is in the least breathable form of GTX, and the two-layer construction used isn't as tough as 3-layer. The Berghaus will probably be OK but I think you can get better bang for your buck, either by spending rather more or by spending rather less.

Kongur MRT is nicely cut, and very toughass, but while that extra length may be great for protection it's probably rather less good if you happen to be doing some properly technical climbing. Don't know if that's relevant
