My apologies if this has been discussed before. I have the National Parks on Memory Map, I also have a nokia 5800, smahing phone when the screen isn't bust.
I know viewranger runs well on the 5800 but don't want to splash out when I have mm . Is there any way to get MM running on the 5800?
As I understand it, no. The Nokia 5800 is Symbian based, and MM is compatible with the Windows Mobile system. I have MM, but did splurge the extra £25 to get National Parks with Viewranger. It works very well mind.
viewranger is so fantastic anyway - its worth the punt. its the only reason i get nokia phones now!
i do use memory map on my pc for making routes & waypoints etc, then upload the route data file to the nokia. i did try and convert the map data but didnt get anywhere even after exhustive searching...
Yeah I also have Viewranger for my Nokia 5800 its well worth the £25 for the national parks version
One thing I will say though is get a waterproof case for that phone if you plan to use it on the hill it takes very little rain to break it as I have allready learnt
I'm planning on getting one of these next month to use as my first GPS (using Viewranger), as I really need a new phone anyway, so it seems ideal. Only, concern was the battery life, especially on multiday trips. However, I spotted loads of replacement batteries and extended life batteries on Fleabay going cheap. Unfortunately, some of the feedback on these batteries is shocking, such as them not working, not being delivered, generally just being shite, through to them blowing up! Therefore, has anyone here purchased a decent spare battery, standard or extended? Plus how long does the original battery roughly last with the GPS in constant use?
Sean, sorry if I’ve hijacked your thread, but it does seem as the answer to you question is no. Plus, maybe you could help answer my questions, along with anyone else with a Nokia 5800. Regards Glynn
Not a problem on the "hijack". I find the battery on the phone to be pretty good generally, but it does drop off when either GPS or internet is in use. I've also had one screen bust on me for no apparent reason when sat safely in my pocket. Still a good phone though. Thansk for the replies all, Viewranger is very good value it seems , so decision made!
Next question, any recommendations for the waterproof case?
I've got a Aquapac Mini phone case which fits the 5800 nicely. The phone doesn't slip inside very easily when you first use the case, which is sort of sticky, but it gets easier pretty quickly. The case is a bit expensive -- about £20, I think -- but it really is waterproof and you can still use the phone with it closed, tho the on-off button is a little tricky to press.
I use my Aloksak because I happened to have it and it was the perfect size. I gave its twin to my brother for his i-Phone.
re. battery life - keeping the GPS on all the time eats the battery; but I only use my GPS for those 'shit, where am I?' moments. I got a spare battery, made I think in Hungary - had nowhere near as much juice as the Korean original. So if you want a spare battery, I'd recommend getting a Korean one. Or getting one of those powermonkey or freeloader solar charger thingies to recharge it on the hoof.
Glynn, if you have memory map then get a HTC diamond or something, so you can use that bit silly to bu a Nokia that wont run microsoft. 5800 is good don't get me wrong but a windows powered phone with MM rocks.
I have a Touch Diamond and i have the whole of the UK 1-50000 on it, great kit and £150 new sim free of ebay,
Just bought an Aquapack for my 5800 but what a pain to get it in! Is there an easy way? Took me several minutes of fighting in the shop, so sticky is the plastic. And how do you work the phone's sliding lock once in? I managed, just, by forcing a fingernail against the plastic, but that was very difficult due to the stickiness, and I can't imagine the case would last long at that point. Any tips?
Kate - how do you find the Aloksac - and where can one get this size now? Seems they've been discontinued? I have one for my passport etc, and am rather loathe to use it for the phone - but might for now.
Have ViewRanger 1:25,000 maps loaded (yesterday!) and will use them on an extended navigation exercise tonight. Initial impression are very good indeed.
I ended up getting the Nokia 5800, and up to now it’s been brilliant. The Viewranger software is really impressive.
My girlfriend kindly bought me an Aquapack case, but just like you rob, I found it really hard work when using the sliding side lock. I didn’t just want to disengage the lock, as it greatly improves the battery life. Anyway, after searching the net for a solution, I tried the nUnLock V2 app which replaces the sliding side lock with an iphone type sliding screen lock. I downloaded it from the Ovi Store. Cost me £4, but it’s been well worth it. Just make sure you download the V2 version as the previous version doesn’t replace the sliding lock.
As for batteries, I tried a so called genuine one of ebay, but it was shat, so I ended up sending it back. I'm now planning on getting a Powermonkey and a genuine battery from the Nokia online store, as a spare. I did also order a 2800 mAh extended battery from China, but that was over a month ago! If it ever turns up, I’ll post my findings
Thanks for that - will try. The very heavy rain did not come til after halfway through the night, so I did not have to resort to a bag for the phone. But the ViewRanger software was superb, really very good indeed. We were out til about 5 am, much in thick fog, and it was so useful to be able to check the phone to see how close we were to what was being looked for - or indeed in some cases, to confirm we were on the target, which was just about invisible. No need to get a grid ref from a GPS then check that against the map, just the little red cross in the circle showing exactly our whereabouts. And such clarity, too. I'll just have to sort out the weatherproofing...
Using it from time to time (in earnest and demonstrating it to colleagues), and making the occasional phone call, the battery life is very good. It is still showing 7/7 bars after 24 hours.
Also, this phone is a replacement for the disastrous SE W715, which Voda finally accepted was not much good for me with its very poor use of weak signal strength. I'm happy to say that the 5800 is very, very much better than the 715, so that's another big point in its favour, living, travelling and working in remote areas as I do.
Well it turns out I'm too cheap to buy a dedeicated waterproof case. A quick rummage through the kitchen cupboards revealed I already own about 200 zip lock resealable small sandwich bags which work perfectly well and still allow me to use the phone just fine.
Glynn, could you explain how the lock works, please? Also, does anyone know if the GPS on the 5800 is a high resolution one? Increasingly impressed with VR mapping, and its ease of use. Really good last night, the track thing showing errors made in navigation legs, drift off bearings etc. Will be excellent for training purposes, as you can show someone just what they did and where they went wrong. Awesome. Used it today for work, too, to map out problems on an area of land of high conservation value I'm involved with.
