I'm thinking of treating myself to a pair of either of these. I've looked at the specs for both but can't really see a lot of difference between them. Anybody using them can shed any light or opinions on them?
The Quest uses more durable materials, and weighs a little bit (about 150 g) more than the cosmic. I'd recommend the Quest, having used it myself. But most important is whether they fit you properly or not - these Salomons have a narrow to medium fitting heel and midfoot, and a wider ball/toe-box. They are low to medium volume, and have very little arch support. A good fit for me with an aftermarket arch support insole, but maybe not for you. With heavier socks, you might want a 1/2 size larger than your measured length. Also, they are a good day-hiker for rough terrain, and can take a multi-day trip if need be, but not a real backpacking boot. I used mine with 50 lbs for about 60 km, but with a season of near daily use I think they might not be up to the task anymore.
I have the Quest too, sadly 1/2 a size too small for me..the quest is sturdier without a doubt, and the toebox is tighter too, hence the mis-purchase. Decent boots, the midsole is a little soft , allowing stones to hurt the feet - harder insoles such as superfeet may help this. I also find the soles a little lacking in grip. Overall, decent boots, but expensive for what they are. I'd rather have meindl Softline Ultras for similar money.
Funny, I mis-sized too, seemed larger at first but realised later I needed an 11, not a 10.5 - still work, but means my toes are a squished at the end of the day, some soft calluses between the toes. Definitely notice the lack of midsole in the forefoot, not so much in the rear. The EVA material also deteriorates too quickly - Salomon should have used a polyurethane midsole instead.
Although a decent overall boot, for the price, I wouldn't buy them again ($220 CAD), but about 30% cheaper I definitely would If they had a better midsole and a slightly stiffer shank, I would pay the full price. MErrell has come out with something like this, the Outbound. At $180 USD, they seem worth it, and Merrell fits similar to Salomon.
Thabks for the replies. I've gone for the Cosmics - Hope I've got the size right. I have a pair of XA Pro Ultra GTX in 11 and they fit perfect so hopefully an 11 in these should be fine.... I hope!
Im confident that if at first they were the right length then it is more plausable than the boot shortening that it has simply broken in and is allowing a little forward movement. Try lacing techniques if you need advice on that pop into a Cotswold or similar shop.
