I have a Vango Storm Shelter 400 which is great if I am out walking with friends to shelter from the wind for some lunch when there is no natural place to protect us from the elements.
However, it is rather big and heavy for when I am out on my own. I am looking for a lightweight shelter suitable for one person. Is there a good model on the market that anyone would recommend?
Thanks, CC

I don't think there are any solo 'group shelters'! But the Terra Nova Superlite Bothy 2 is very compact and only 230g. Not too much excess material if you pull it in under you for solo use. RRP £60 although you should find it a bit cheaper. For RRP £40 and 400g you could settle for their standard Bothy 2.

Vango used to do a one person shelter but they seem to have discontinued it; they were on offer regularly on fleabay a few months ago, but no longer: perhaps all the stock's gone. You can pick up the 2 man, the Storm Shelter 200, for under £30.

I carry a Vango Storm Shelter 200 when by myself. It is light although a bit bulky. To be honest I think I've only used it once as if the weather is bad I don't bother with a break or wait until I find some reasonable shelter. I carry it mainly in case of an emergency situation arises.

I don't know what size it is, but TGO magazine are offering an Outdoor Designs bothy bag in this months mag, if you take out a years subscription.

Ah well, you can't beat bricks and mortar for security - remember the three little pigs and the wooluf?

That's a great idea Kate! Next time I'll carry a hod, bricks, sand, cement and cement mixer.... Now where can I get a 300L pack and a 50L platy....

 Thanks for all the replies.
The Terra Nova Superlite Bothy 2 sounds good, but a bit pricey! Is it time to buy some material and make my own I wonder??

You would do alright with a British Army bothy bag I reckon - it's not a 'sit-inside' sort of thing like mountain shelters, but they're pretty roomy and would stop the wind dead. I've slept out in mine many a time. You can get them for under £20 on eBay.

Sorry, 'bivi bag', not bothy bag.
|
 |
Yeah, but they're way heavier than a bothy bag, and though I've had a number of dogs trying to get into mine, I'm not sure I'd want to share it with another person!

Personally Kate....I'd prefer to share mine with a person than a number of dogs....

They're generally very nice and polite dogs, if slightly over-enthusiastic at times!
