Hi all

I currently have a Garmin 60csx GPS that I bought a couple of years ago - it was unknown to me to be a US model so came with US base map.

I am a GPS idiot and having finally taken the GPS out of the box i want to start using when out walking.

I was thinking of changing to an Etrex model? Are they better than the 60csx?

Also what software would i need to use the GPS in snowdonia? (I only need this region for now as am emigrating next year)

Any advice appreciated

Regards

Becky

A 60CSx is much the same as an Etrex Vista HCx. It's not worth changing.

The Etrex version is a bit smaller, has a slightly smaller screen, and the battery lasts a bit longer. The 60CSx has a few features the Etrex doesn't, most of which are irrelevant when walking.

The base map that comes with it is fairly useless, even if you have the Europe base map rather than the US base map. They have not very accurate M, A and B roads only. To get more, you need to get proper maps, which must be Garmin compatible.

Your options are:-
a) City Navigator - This is roads only, but pretty much all accessible surfaced roads. It's approx £45 UK & Ireland on SD card, or £90 Europe on DVD. With the DVD version, you copy data to an SD card. It can also be used on your PC for planning or route review, and also you don't run the risk of corrupting the card and losing all the data.

b) Topo GB - this is Great Britain only, and costs something like £100. You get roads, 10m contours, some paths and tracks, most watercourses, and some areas of woodland. There are equivalent products for some other countries, such as France.

c) OpenStreetmap. This is a wiki, with the map made up from open source data such as out of copyright maps, the NASA Space Shuttle radar data for contours, and a whole load of people's GPS tracks. It's patchy, but where it's good it's better than anything else. Check the online data linked above to see what there is for where you want to go.
If you want to use it, go to http://yacf.co.uk/forum/ (cycling forum), and look on andygates' sig line for an up to date download of UK data.

There is no possibility of using OS maps. You'd need to get a recent model, such as a Dakota or Colorado, and pay loadsamoney for the OS maps. I reckon you'd be better off with a SatMap, or even a suitable phone.

The 60csx is imho a good gps.  I nearly bought one a couple of years agop but got a Hcx for the reasons mentioned by Andrew.

I downloaded free contours for the UK from (I think, working away at the mo so can't see my computer) a link on the SMC or MCof S website.  Not OS but more than good enough for what I need.

Unless you want to spend a lot more money on a new unit for the os mapping, esp if your going abroad soon I wouldn't bother.  My phone has a gps but signal is not as good and battery life is poor.

no. afraid not. you can only use garmin maps on the gps and you only have the choice of their topo offering.

i personally hate this mapping as the screen is too small to see anything worthwhile on it and zooming out isn't all that helpful in trying to see where you are.

you can use the gps with a map and compass to tell you where you are.

maybe grandmothers and eggs but...

i would strongly recommend you know how to use a map and compass before entrusting yourself to a gps and then learning how to use a gps to its best effect - they can be interesting, strange and frustrating beasts at times. of course you can use all three at once but be sure to practice thoroughly with each.

For now, go with the Openstreetmap. I use this on my new Oregon 200. You can get ready compiled UK map from http://sites.google.com/site/talkytoasteruk/home

You will need at least a 512mb memory card for this map.

Hi

Thanks again for your input.

I am more than happy with a compass and map but wanted to use a GPS along side it.

I thought that i could buy a memory map and load it onto my laptop and then transfer it onto my GPS - but it looks like form your advice i can't.

So next question, is there any point sticking with my Garmin if i can't use software with it?

Cheers

Becky

Don't despair Rebecca ... You can buy memory map, and get full OS mapping on your pc (where the screen is big enough to read it!), set up routes on your pc and then transfer the routes to your gps. You can think of a route as a set of waypoints - when you activate the route on your gps the gps will tell you how far and in what direction the next waypoint is, just as though you had made a route card. If you print the relevant bit of map out before you go, you can use the GPS to navigate or the paper map and compass - whatever suits. Memory map lets you download a bit of map free, or buy a small specified section for a few pounds, or just the National Parks for £30, so you could easily experiment without spending too much money, though you will also need a lead to connect your GPS to your pc.
