I know this may seem a stupid question but what is the differents between mens and womens shoes? surely a size 8 is a size 8.

dunno, but my missus prefers mens size 8 over womens size 8 for Keen Targhee walking shoes - she says the mens feel different and are a nicer colour combo.

A size 8 can be any number of different shapes: feet are complex 3d structures and vary in all dimensions.  AIUI, a typical woman's foot in a given size will be different in shape from a typical man's.  Having said that, any given man's feet may be very, very different from the next.

Which is why, whatever sex, it's really important to try footwear on.

Pete.

Women's lasts (shoe shapes) are generally designed for a foot with a smaller volume than men - we tend to have narrower ankles and feet regardless of length.

I wear 7.5 in women's fit, but 7 in men's.

Ever since many boot brands dropped size 6 in their men's ranges, I've been wearing women's boots. I have very broad feet and a high instep but have no difficulty in finding women's boots that fit me perfectly.

Ever since many boot shops (I'm glaring at YOU, Cotswold!!) dropped small sizes in their women's ranges last year I'm back to being unable to buy boots locally again

I was told today that womens have smaller heel cups, with an arche nearer to the rear of the shoe... perfect for my feet by the sound of it

I've often thought that as well (for my feet that is, couldn't comment on yours of course), do any womens boots/shoes go up to size 10?

Well - I discovered this year that a womens size large glove fits me perfect... may cross-dressing is the new outdoors trend

From http://www.onsnow.co.uk/ChoosingSnowShoes.html

Sex Specific Snowshoes

Sex, weight with pack and intended use should be considered when choosing the perfect pair of snowshoes. The snowshoe industry figured out that men and women perform physical activity differently, long before the ski industry. Women’s Q-angle, the angle created at the knee where the thigh bone angles in, is greater than men’s, which produces a narrower stance and abducted, toes turned-out, stride. And women’s gait tends to be shorter and faster than men’s. To address this difference most snowshoe companies make sleeker women specific shoes with a tapered tail and narrower nose. Some raise the rear frame to reduce heel drag and fatigue.

As women’s arches tend to pronate, or flatten, some designs have arch support and bindings that wrap around the whole foot limiting rotational torque and thereby pronation. Bindings molded around women specific lasts and padding for insulation attend to the size and temperature variance.

That's due to me struggling to catch up with my longer-gaited walking companion!

The thing to remember is these situations are averages: my wife is taller than me and has proportionately longer legs as well, so her gait tends to be longer than mine.  And as for toes turned-out, mine turn out much more than hers.  And so on: so just because you're whtaver sex you shouldn't assume that these factors will apply to you.  Try in order to see.

Pete.
