I want to give bivying a go, so am looking for a bivy bag. My sleeping bag is a phd custom long and extra wide, so I am looking for something bigger than standard sizes. I would like something with some sort of bug mesh, and a partial zip on one side to ease entry and exit.

So anyone got any sugestions? does anywhere make custom options if I can't find what i want off the shelf?

Have you seen the Alpkit Hunka XL ? I have the regular sized Hunka and have used it year round in the UK.

Yep seen that, doesn't seem to have bug mesh or access zip though.

MSP,

If you're just going to give it a go and don't know whether you'll like it, it might be wise to go with the XL Hunka (given its great value for money) and improvise midge/mosi protection. Another spacious and inexpensive option is the UK MoD goretex bivi with the same limitations. I've reviewed mine here.

However, if you want to get a well specced bivy with bug protection I'd steer you towards Integral Designs eVent offerings. They are available from UltralightOutdoor by special order (their stock of ID bivvies includes the basic and the hooped but not the intermediate ones).

If you have the $ and are prepared to wait - them MLD do some great bivvy bags. Ron is also know for customising gear.

Or, Titanium Goat have the Ptarmigan bivvy, with a water resistant top and a choice of head net covering. (I have one of these and it is superb!)

Otherwise go with local cheaper gear and stick a simple headnet over the top, - my first way of coping with the flying vampires.

The Hunka is very good - as suggested.

Nodrog.
