 Just bought an Etrex H and been playing about with it. I have: Location Elevation Odometer Vertical Speed Time of Day Sunset What preferences do you have?! Also, if you hold "page" and "up button" at start up you get into the engineers page...nothing much there except it shows the temperature of the unit. Handy maybe? TG

nooo... why? DOH! Mine only has 5 fields as well!!! I thought you might have had an older version with the globe on it. Sorry! So I have: Location, Elevation, Vert Speed, Time of Day & Sunset I have hummed and hawed for years about getting one nad convinced myself that i needed a vista hcx but could never justify the price. Got the Etrex H the other day and Im well chuffed with it  I will only use it when i get lost, but it looks like a great bit of kit, even though its really basic! The Etrex is (IMHO) one of the few true value for money items of outdoor equipment. I use mine to track where I've been which I then save to my PC (via Memory Map), like having a digital log-book. ...actually, I've just changed my fields to: TRIP ODOM TIME-TOTAL MOVING AVG ELEVATION LOCATION

why vertical speed?
do you fall over/off things a lot or take superstrides (in the absence of tall buildings to leap over)

vertical speed = rate of ascent = how fast am i going up = not a bad idea, i shall give it a try, wonder over how many seconds it smooths the answer.

 I have both the eTrex and eTrex H. The older version, the eTrex , has the globe above the screen, the H doesn't. Well, on mine that's the case. Both of mine will only permit five display fields. They are as follows; Location Heading Elevation Timeof day Sunset

And a combination of others, if necessary, on the compass screen.
