well now its cold up here. i was out testing my alpkit skyhigh 1000
now im another cold sleeper and had high hopes for this, clearly much better than previous winters but still not getting cosy, now i realise im clearly cold getting into it, i did try warming me up but i still cooled down, i started off in thermals and added more clothing. id had something to eat before hand. but i was still cold, not shiverning just now comfortable i realised part of my issue was cold air from my camping mat, id planned on putting my closed cell on top of this, but someone forgot their mat so i parted with that for them.so i used jackets spare clothing and this helped enough on friday night, but sat night was even colder, ( only just under freezing)
what next?
on the plus side,my down gilet, is fabolous and ive hardly taken it off since i got it, bit paranoid about how wet it can get though, as in drizzle etc worried me and i took it off
I find I'm warmer in a down bag if I have less clothes on. I have slept in a SH1000, it's way too warm for me. I'd certainly look at your mat, I bit the bullet and got an Exped downmat last year... no cold comes through the floor anymore.
im a scout leader so weight not a huge issue normally, but space can be.
i started off in minimal and as i said when i sorted the ground issue that solved the issue on friday i was toasty but last night was that bit colderor perhaps i was colder and tireder but id really like to sort this issue finally
Kelvin's suggestion of a downmat is a good one - though they're not cheap. The closed cell mat in conjunction with an inflatable one is worth pursuing first. If there's plenty of room in the bag, you could consider getting a lightweight summer down bag to pop in there, creating a 'combi bag' which should give the rating of the Alpkit bag a boost.
I'm afraid my ultimate solution was a very expensive PHD Hispar bag, but even then I boosted it when snowholing with down trousers, cos the Hispar is a fairly roomy bag.
Think it may depend on the clothes and the extra bag. PHD do both a synthetic and a down 'combi' bag designed to go outside a standard bag, don't know if putting a synthetic one inside a down one would be as effective, but I haven't used a combi bag, I just ended up buying that Hispar.
right so ive slept on it and have thought a few things.
i made a few mistake, i assumed my new sleeping bag was going to solve all issues, i only took my silk liner, and not my fleece liner, a blanket for the floor and a sigg to double as a hot water bottle, i also had to part with my roll mat to a forgetful scout
i got cold before bed, but that couldnt be helped.
the issue was solved on friday by putting my jacket on top of camping mat, and on saturday by the down gilet getting wraped round my middle,
i just wished i was like most others and sleep warm. im fine during the day but night i really suffer from the cold
Sounds like you lost all your ground insulation? (for noble reasons!) You really do need some of that over & above sleeping bag.
The down under you still gives some insulation but it gets crushed so its not half as effective as the stuff in the rest of the sleeping bag, and you're in contact with the ground of course so can lose a lot of heat that way.
