As my Buffalo/Montane question, I want a pair of warm mitts to use as liners with my Tuff Bags, I like the idea of the Lowe Alpine convertible mitts as I can flip back the mitt part for things requiring dexterity, however the primary function is insulation/fast dry time/warmth when wet so I'd forego the dexterity of the Lowe mitts if the Buffalo ones were better. The Lowe Alpine mitts are made from Aluetian fleece, see here
I like the design of the Lowe Alpine mitts -- they look like a bit of a gimmick but I find they work really well in most conditions, and mean you don't have to faff around taking them on and off whenever you require any dexterity. I also find the cut a bit more comfortable/normal than that of Buffalo mitts, which always feel too narrow for how long they are. I have worn them with Tuff Bags and find this a good combination, tho possibly a bit too warm apart from when it's well below freezing -- but that might not be a problem for those who run cold.
But the Buffalo mitts are warmer on their own in really cold weather and give more warmth when wet. I've never tried them with Tuff Bags, but I'd have thought having a waterproof layer over the Pertex might negate some of its breathability and fast drying quality.
In the end I bought the Buffalo mitts, fit is a bit tight around the thumb even though I went for XL but for the intended use, insulation/warmth for wet cold hands and the ability to dry quickly they'll be fine. The Lowe Alpine ones while they offered more dexterity looked like they'd feel cold once wet, be slow to dry and provide less warmth.
