I'm in the market for a good quality lightweight backpacking tent.Looking for a 2 man tent, 4 season, quick and easy to erect. I'm 6 foot 4" tall so need something with plenty of room. It will be used mostly in the Lake District.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Terra Nova Voyager would fit that bill - amongst other things.

I have the Terra Nova Explorer which is slightly larger and I really can't fault it. Stands up to all sorts of weather. Have a look at Lightwave too.

Well, if you check out previous threads on here about 2 person backpacking tents you'll find that there have been lots of debates about the pros and cons of different tents. I looked into this quite a lot a couple of years ago when replacing my trust Saunders Spacepacker with something 4 season. Eventually, I ended up with a Voyager but there are lots to choose from that are probably only better or worse in as much as they meet your personal preferences more or less closely. Very few tents like that will easily fit somebody of your height in and that's one of the reasons why I have a Voyager. Obvious alternatives might be a Hilleberg Nallo or Macpac Minaret. I'm sure you'll find lots of opinions and information if you can be arsed to trawl through the past threads looking.

BTW, I have been accused in the past (quite unjustly) of being obsessed by tents.

Funny enough Cath , " IF YOU CAN BE ARSED TO TRAWL PAST THREADS ".
I did just that but could find no previous thread that dealt with the height issue.
Wouldn't want you thinking I was a lazy b*****d.

I have a lightwave T2 xt, with or without the xt bit the T2 is a very long tent and is happy in gale force blizards, not difficult to put up once you have done the usual practice pitch. It is very sensitive to being correctly pitched with regard to inner touching the outer, everything has to be very taught. Overall I am very happy with it.

John - didn't mean to imply that you'd be lazy if you didn't go through the past threads. More that it would be soul destroyingly tedious so I wouldn't blame you if you couldn't be arsed :-)

Hi John,

Had the same problem as yourself a couple of years ago. (Try looking for a "Tents for tall people" thread).

The Voyager made the shortlist, as did the Vaude Mark 2 which is available in a long version.

Ended up going for the Mark2 cos it was cheaper and it's easy to split the weight between two.

IIRC, Vango tents seemed (on average) pretty long compared to others.

Saunders also do "long" and lightweight tents.

I am 6ft 10ins! The 2 person backpacking tent I use is a Terra Nova Solar 2. 3 season I'd say rather than 4, but would otherwise fit your bill. Certainly has good internal and porch space, and good head room.

I also have a Vaude Mk 2, although it's now old and worn out. I'd say it was too heavy for backpacking, but it was an ideal tent for motorbike camping. Robust, very quick and easy to erect, and lots of room (much roomier than the TNS2 for example).

Look out for a tent show, if you can, where you can see all these tents put up on display. Try them for size. Then make your decision.

John

Some shops can put the tent up for you in store (velcro "pegs"). Might be worth asking about that once you've narrowed down your choice.

I've got a Lightwave tent, and I'd echo Julie's comments above. Good value for money too.

The TN Voyager is reduced at Field and Trek online at the moment.

I do not work for TN or F&T

I'm 6'3" and have made a few lanky git-esque contributions to 4-season tent threads over the years.

The Lightwave t2 and g2 are both pretty long. In particular, the semi-geodesic G2 has a good bit more room than the voyager for a similar weight. The have good head height as well, which is also a consideration.

There is also the macpac minaret, which has one long side and one short side. Potentially good unless your camping partner is also tall side.

For a bit more weight, the inners of the Mountain Hardwear Nightview and TNF Westwind are both about 240cm in length, which is exceptional.

Overall, if inner length and weight are both crucial, I would go for the Lightwave G2, ideally with the xpd inner and poles and the cylq flysheet (4 season and under 2.5 kg) if you can stretch to it.

Thanks to you all for your advice and help,
it has given me plenty of options to look at.

Cath - Didn't think you were having a go at me, my reply post was written tongue in cheek, a feeble attempt at humour.
I promise to try harder next time. LOL

I've been having a look at the lightwave tents. The G2 seems a good size.
One thing troubles me though, why no user reviews of Lightwave products???, or am I missing something here.
Cath - I noticed on an earlier thread that you actually had one sent to you although you didn't keep it ( see , I could be arsed LOL ).

Size wise how did it compare against a voyager?

I have a ZR0 Cylq which has so far proven to be very good although it does need to be correctly pitched as Julie says. Am goiing to review but will use it a few more times first - but so far so good.

I think the G1 and the voyager are about the same size. The G2 is a bit longer, wider and higher.

Given that its a semi-geodesic rather than a tunnel, I would have thought that the G2 is less sensitive to careful pitching.

John - I didn't keep the Lightwave tent because I couldn't really convince myself that I really needed a new tent of that size at the time. I was very impressed with it.
