My girlfriend and I are going to do the GR20 in Corsica next month. We need to sort out travel insurance (for hiking) and base layers.

Travel insurance people have recommended BMC which is about £75 for both of us, any others good?

For baselayers looking to spend max £30 per item. I have been looking at the Regatta ecosphere which got a good review as well as the Montane smartwool (2010). It's going to be hot and we are away for a month so cotton is a no no, anyone have an suggestions?

the rohan ultra silver range is both very light and quick drying.

i would wear a shirt if it's going to be hot and not a base layer. a shirt is cooler (it shades your skin rather than sitting on it) and has lots of buttons for ventilation, a  collar and sleeves for sun protection.

Have a look at the the Austrian Alpine Club with membership there is rescue and repatriation insurance plus reciprocal rights discount in affiliated huts all for about £40 per person but lasts a year [January to January].Reciprocal rights card is extra with BMC membership

I have the BMC insurance, but two other options for insurance that would cover the costs of rescue are:

- Snowcard

- joining the UK section of the Austrian Alpine Club

I've not got cost info to hand but I'm sure you can find it via google easily enough. It may come down to what other aspects of travel insurance (medical, baggage, cancellation, etc) you want on top of the rescue cover.

Many thanks for all the replies! Does anyone have any suggestions for shirts in that case? I know Rohan do them but they are quite expensive. I admit I have been concentrating on base layers and have not looked at shirts.

FredL,

I'm sending this link as an example only because I doubt you would want to purchase it from the U.S.  Anyway, I own the exact shirt and it truly does perform well in high temps.  Lately here in Michigan the temp has exceeded 32c on a very regular basis.  I own T Shirt base layers and this shirt seems to perform the best for me when it gets as hot as it has been lately.

Maybe you can find something similar in the U.K.  The pockets are functional and there is an interior pocket that is very large and can be accessed via vertical zipper next to the left breast pocket.  I should have purchased more than one.

Whatever shirt you wear you are going to be sweaty and horrible (assumming you aren't at the moment!). Just pick the oldest one you've got, rinse it at every opportunity, wear it ever day and chuck it at the end.

I live in the south of Turkey, so most of my walking is done in hot conditions. I second Parky Again's recommendation of a proper shirt. Whatever you wear will be sweaty, and a shirt can be more comfortable. Also, I think it's important to have long sleeves (but ones which can be rolled up) as if you get sunburnt, the following days will be hell if you can't cover up. Personally, I've found the LoweAlpine Zion shirt to be good. GoOutdoors had them on offer the last time I was back in the UK. I've also seen them for sale on Amazon. There is a women's equivalent but I forget the name.

For t-shirt type base layers, I've found the RAB Aeon to be good in the heat. I've just got a Rohan Ultra Silver Crew - it looks good (so light!) - but haven't had time to use it yet. For a budget option, I like the Teekmates Vapour t-shirts. They have a nice open weave that lets a breeze through.

For hot conditions, I'm not sure that cotton is a no no. You don't have to worry about the chill factor at stops, so the main problem is drying time. If you can find a loose fitting cotton shirt in a very light, open weave, I think it could work. However, I've yet to find anything suitable at a decent price.

The Austrian Alpine Club is good value. However, it doesn't cover "normal" holiday insurance, such as lost baggage, flight delays, etc. So you need to factor in the cost of an ordinary travel policy.

Thanks again, I am stalking some Rohan shirts on ebay. Going to be going to the a gooutdoors shop on Sunday (will also be picking up the high titanium stove). If that fails will pick up some columbia titanium from portsmouth.

Luckily my girlfriend will be sweaty and horrible (impossible) too. Anyone have experience with "couple" it says "as married". Does that mean living together for an amount of time?
