have seen some nice thicker sleeping pads like the neo air model which is 6.3cm thick!!
i'm just curious if u find your arms falling off the sides and/or have a hard time getting your pillow to be high enough (since ur head is higher off the ground now). maybe even one of your legs falls off the side?
just wondering, thanks!

Never found either issue a problem with the NeoAir or a 7cm car camping self inflating mat I have -- but then I don't move around much in my sleep.

i keep my bits in my sleeping bag!! Pillow also goes inside the top of my sleeping bag! If you unzip yours maybe a silk liner to keep you tucked in... or all else failling try one of these

lol @ Dids' picture! Arms in sleeping bag can't go anywhere, pillow seems to stay put on sleeping mat underneath sleeping bag hood.

sometimes i sleep with my sleeping bag fully open (only in the summer time of course) and just on top of me (so my body is touching the thermarest) so arms are all over the show and the pillow is NOT in the sleeping bag hood of course.

 - yes, pillow is a problem, if you are lightweight conscious and thus have the short one as I do. Not a problem with the full length version I imagine, and even that one weighs less than a short prolite 3. - so on balance I am quite a fan of the Neoair. Extremely light and much tougher than it looks. - edited to add: and it does not need to be too thick. You blow it up so it is as thick as you want it to be

Absolutely - a degree of limpness adds to comfort in my experience

I slept for the first time on my Z Lite on the weekend and loved the fact you are at ground level. It means you can stretch out loads, and the pillow stays put. Its also cool the way for some reason it seems more civilised when sitting around, just seems normal and not perching high up on something that you are slipping off and around

 @ Kate Ooooer missus!

I must say I've never had any problem with limbs falling over the edge of a SIM even though I'm a side sleeper and - so the missus tells me - I pitch about a lot. I currently use an Alpkit Wedge for car camping (it's quite wide, 640mm IIRC) and a Mountain Equipment Helium 3.8 for backpacking (which is considerably narrower at 500mm). As an off-topic aside, the Wedge doesn't self-inflate much - it always needs plenty of puffs - despite always being stored at home inflated. It's very comfy though.

One of the reasons I returned my Neo-Air to REI was its height. Just not comfortable for me when I used my down bag fully unzipped in quilt mode. Another was its noise and finally having to blow the mattress up entirely at high altitudes was not fun. I'll take my ancient Thermarest Lite (late 1990s) regular which weighs only one ounce more than the Neo- Air.

I did wonder what was going through Kate's mind - and how long til someone responded! I've been wavering on getting one of these thick mats for a while. But I worry that the pillow height and more seriously, the reduction in foot clearance in my Nallo 2 will negate much of the benefit. Must be great for bothy use though.

I don't know myself half the time! It's Admissions this week which requires the occasional outlet for under-used brain capacity
