I'm looking to buy either the MLD SpeedMid or SuperMid and combining it with a 2 person inner nest (probably Bear Paw). I like the idea of the lower SpeedMid as i'm guessing it will shed wind better and also means i can set it up with only 1 pole; MLD recommend not using a pole jack with the SuperMid as it is so high but using 2 poles together. I only use 1 pole and also think a long pole jack doesn't look so great/stable. A lower height also means i loose some internal usable space, but as there's lots of that i'm not so bothered.
Note: the Supermid is 175cm high vs the SpeedMid is 135cm high (apparently the same as the Duomid).
So my question: Anyone have any good or bad experince with this (or similar) set-up?Anyone think this is a good or bad idea? Anyone have any comments, ideas or tips?
As an alternative i've still got the Scarp 2 in the back of my mind...
I have the equivalent of a Supermid, its a slightly older version. I use it with two walking poles strapped together.
I've been really pleased with it - its palatial inside
I wouldn't want to pitch it somewhere very windy though, its quite high so catches the wind more than the speedmid would. I've taken it on all my recent wildcamping trips, perfect for two plus a dog, or more frequently one plus a dog, which gives loads of room
sounds like you aren't sure what the shelter might be used for? or trying to cover too many bases. If so, Scarp 2. IMO. Though we manage with a Scarp 1 for overnighters...
someone will be along soon to suggest a trailstar...;)
if you did decide to go for the taller/larger option, dont forget to look at Golite SL5; Oware Pyramid tarps or the Bearpaw Luna especially if you need it quickly.
Hi benp1 - Thanks for the response. Glad to hear you like it. I've asked Ron at MLD if he would custom the Speedmid with a peak vent but he says no as there's more chance of wind blown rain coming in because of the shallower sides. Do you think it migt be a problem not having a vent? He can custom extra perimeter and mid panel tie-outs which i'm hoping would help in the wind.
Hi Mole - I'm sure what the shelter is for; quite possibly i'm trying to cover too many bases. I guess, if you like, the Scarp 2 would be my 'default' tent which i would compare all others too; as it meets all my requirements pretty well. I'm just thinking that i can do slightly better (for my requirements) with something like a Supermid/Speedmid, and i'm vering towards the Speedmid due to better wind shedding and set-up with just one pole.
I've looked at the SL5 and Oware mids, and although looked extensively on Bear Paw for inners (and looked at about everything else) didn't see the Luna. Will have a closer look - thanks.
I looked at the trailstatr as well, but having tried i just couldn't see how the 5-sides would work better for what i want than the 4 sides. It just doesn't seem to fit better with a two person inner. Maybe i'm looking at it wrong (?).
See here, back in September. As of next week I'll be using that Luxe Mini Peak II in the Highlands for a week or two while waiting on modifications to my 'usual' tent (a GoLite SL3). I'll post up my feelings after I'm finished.
My gut feeling is that, at 6'+ I'm going to be too tall for the Luxe tent, in which case I'll be selling it on at a cheap price (if it works out I'll make a few mods and use it myself). While it is not comparable to the MLD tents in terms of quality, it's roughly analogous in terms of size, liveability and how it'd handle the weather.
You might want to keep an eye out on Ebay in a few weeks for a cheap test tent...
The Luxe looks interesting, but as you say, possibly a little short. I'll see how you get on and check ebay. If nothing else; it would be great to here feedback about how this sort of mid handles Highlands weather. Especially as it's about the same height as the Speedmid.
