I am really keen to purchase a Softshell and very interested in the Shield or Pulsar from Mountain Equipment or the Zion from Marmot. Anybody any knowledge of these products. Why is it that I am struggling to find stockists in this country. A helpful chap from Cotswolds in Glasgow claimed he had phoned Mountain Equipment and they said they didn't have any stock! I emailed ME but they haven't replied. If nobody can help then any suggestions for alternative. I am looking for a winter Softshell which will do for skiing in France in New Year.

Can only imagine that ME haven't got their stock yet this year, or didn't actually make any more for this winter batch as its getting replaced next spring or something.

Ellis Brigham certainly seem to have the shield. And Pulsars in small/large.

There are also plenty of other windstopper style things for skiing - this say, or a few haglofs bits (eg) or...

cf the Zion, no reason not to look at RABs Neo shell and a thin fleece to cover the weight. Functionally equivalent. Actually at least as effective as the sundry windstopper stuff too.

Although if you check the previous threads about skiing clothing on here think you'll find some scepticism about whether there's any reason for a membrane soft shell rather than various more breathable alternatives. (Paramo, various sorts of lined windshirts, stretch wovens etc.).

I am really keen to purchase a Softshell...

As has been pointed out elsewhere, "soft shell" means very different things to different folk.  So rather than decide to buy "a soft shell" it might be best if you say what you're planning and then folk can suggest a suitable garment.

The Zion is actually a hard shell in all but name.  Of the MEs you mention, the Windstopper one is almost waterproof but the seams would leak (and when they do it'll take forever and a day to dry out). Powershield is almost windproof but a fair bit more breathable than Windstopper.  I think it's great stuff in the right application, but also that it's over priced (£240 is a lot to pay so you want it to be the right thing) and over specified in the wrong application.  So what's your application?

Pete.

Cheers for your responses guys. I was maybe a bit vague with initial post so apologies. Anyway, the skiing part is not important as it is only a week away with the kids. I was also a bit general with the Softshell term and I am fully aware of the different versions and fabrics which are classed 'soft'. I love my kit and enjoy doing the research on the new products. I have a good selection of stuff including shells, buffalo top, older softshells etc etc. I really just want to take advantage of the fact my wife is expecting me to get some new kit for the holiday. Yee ha! I don't want ski specific but something for general wear and some good old Scottish winter walking(cold, crisp days, blue skies!!!). I think my main gripe is the lack of stockists of a good range of ME and more so Marmot kit up here in Scotland or online. I have a bit of a rugby player physique, big across the shoulder and arms and find it a struggle with fit in these areas and with some manufacturers have to go for XL. I like the look of the Zion and appreciate an outer shell might still be required in certain conditions. I am covered for that. So if anyone would like to open an outdoor clothing shop in the Dunblane area and stock everything I like the look of so I can try it on then please do. Even better I will come and work for you. Cheers.

I do like the Fang/Neo/Shield/Pulsar/Zion. . A few options so will just get the plastic out and try and get a L and XL in each sourced and delivered.
