For late season and winter use, I'm looking at getting a pair of Schoeller-type trousers.

At the mo, it's a toss-up between the Mammut Champ and the MHW Velocity, but does anyone have experience of other makes?

I reckon Macpac Mission is better than MHW Velocity (I've got both). Try them on for fit, as they're quite slim.

I Have had the mammut champs for a few years and they are my first choice in leg wear pretty much all year round (unless it's really hot). They are very hard wearing and have only been cold in them once (scottish winter in cairngorms) but with powerstretch tights underneath were great. I wore them in the alps and they were fantastic. I havent tried the MHW ones but i know that they are made of a thinner version of scholler than the champ pants. I have a pair of arcteryx ones made of this lighter (dynamic I think!) material and they are good but not as warm. HTH

Darren the Mammut pants are awesome ecspecially if you get them from the factory outlet next to DMM in N Wales :) Highly recommend them. The MHW Velocity pants have a strange fit that either works for you or doesn't !

Cheers. Looks like Upandunder are the only place selling on-line though.

Order them. Off to rest the credit card now. ouch!

Try waiting around 6 weeks - cos their essentially a winter product and you will see an awful lot more shops selling them.

Marmot ATV Pant also worth adding to your wish list.

They arrived this morning (excellent service) and fit like a glove. All I need is the weather to really try them out. That and a pair of natty Gordon Gecko braces for them

Sprayway did a pair of trousers a few years back but stopped producing them for some reason. They were and still are, excellent. Mine have been going for about 6 years now. The one thing I don't like about them is the elasticated belt system to hold them up. I eventually lost enough weight that they no longer stayed up using their elasticated belt system and there were no belt loops to use. I still have one pair unused with the original ticket still on them. I sometimes stock up on excellent kit in case the manufacturer drops it from their range.

The Mammuts are a bit thicker and heavier though but I've not had a pair of those for very long. I still find the Sprayways more comfortable.

I used Mammut Champs all last winter. The best pants i have ever tried. Miles better than ron hills etc, etc. Too warm for summer. Pricey, but worth it.

Hi,

Bringing this last post into to life..

Last winter i got the Mammut extreme hybrid pants (http://www.mammut.ch/mammut/katalog.asp?view=detail&did=1&dart=3&tid=54067&sid=2)

for skiing and i am interested to find if i can use them for mountaineering in Alps

during the summer.

What do you think? Will they be too warm or too heavy for summer in Alps?

Is the  schoeller®-WB-400 NanoSphere  waterproof?

Also would be looking info on the type of boots.

Was adviced to go for B2 but since i am keen to continue mountaineering, shall i go for B3?

Cheers,

I'd have thought WB400 would be too warm - I have dryskin trousers which seem to cope pretty well with temps up to about 20 degrees but WB is much warmer.  My WB400 jacket has stood up to rain pretty well but not tested in real long term torrential stuff....will also depend on whether the seams are sealed to be able to say its totally waterproof.

Thanks for your reply Steph..

I think the seams are watertight sealed. I am not sure it would 100% with torrential stuff, since it is a combination of soft-shell and hardshell probably the soft shell will not be..

From my perspective the trousers are ok for skiing but am just wondering if they will be too heave for summer mountaineering in the Alps?

And I was saying I think they WILL be too warm but then you could test them in similar temps here couldn't you?

i just dont want to give more money for other pair of trousers.. guess i ll have to look now.

the recommendation is they game is berghaus accelerator.  (£180!)..

have also seen berghaus alpine pro paclite and montane spectra.

Do you think they would be suitable for summer alpine?
