I'm thinking of buying a one man tent. The main criteria is that it should be light enough for me to carry all day, strong enough to cope with wild camping during the winter in the Lakes, and simple to put up and take down.

I've already got a Terra Nova Quaser, but that's too heavy for me to carry on my own.

Any suggestions as to what I should buy?

What about TNF's mountain marathon? Very light (about 1.6kg i think). Easy to put up. I've used mine in some pretty nasty weather & it's stood up to it. Might be a tad cold during winter though (unless you've got a nice warm sleeping bag)

Also got it at a reduced price - £110 i think, so that makes it a whole lot nicer.

I posted a similar thread, and am currently mulling between Hilleberg Akto (expensive but highly recommended), Macpac Microlight and VauDe Hogan. Check the user reviews, and my thread (which I shall now bump up by thanking those concerned for their advice!)

I just ordered myself a Hilleberg on the basis of the answers I got to a similar thread, but about green fly sheets.................

Can't wait to get out to the Highlands with it!!!

Lorraine,

Of course, if I had the money it would be the Hilleberg as Dr Icy & Richard have advised.

But, i like shivering in my tent,it's good for the constitution

Don't get me wrong, I can't afford it either! I'm currently inclined towards the Macpac, there are a slew of positive write-ups on this site and the current Cotswold on line offer means that it would cost £170 rather than £200. It is green also (or 'sage' as they put it) and can apparently be erected all in one.

Thanks for all the info. I'm swaying between the Macpac Microlight and the Hilleberg.

I'd really like to see both tents in the flesh before making a final decision. I know that Needle Sports sell the Macpac tent, but not sure who sells Hilleberg in Keswick.

Chris Townsend (tgo gear tester) has used the Atko for years.

I'm not sure if he is posting at the moment, but I would have thought that was recommendation enough.

Hi,

I use a Macpac Microlight, double - poled (it's built to acommodate an extra pole, and it has taken the worst that Scottish high level winter camping can throw at it.

All the best,

Colin

Just got a new Lightwave Zr0 Trek for just over a ton (ebay). Won't be using it until next year though!

Well in that case Marcus, maybe I could borrow it and trial it for you. Only joking.

Colin - do you use your Macpac with a footprint?

Or here £119:

Thought I saw it cheaper somewhere.

I have a lightwave T2 XT which is too big for what you want but I can recomend tham as a brand, I am very pleased with mine, both light and strong. It always surprises people what a big tent I pull out of such a little bag.

Lorraine - there are a couple of user reviews of the Zr0 trek on here.

After deciding not to spend silly money on an Akto, I was put off the Macpac by what looks (from the reviews I've seen) like a poor ability to cope with wind. The Lightwave at 1.6kg for the "heavy" model seemed like the ideal compromise between weight and price.

Couldn't find any Lighwave tents in Keswick on Sunday, so ended up buying a Macpac Microlight instead.

Had a go at pitching it on the floor in Cotswold - they even put some screws into the floor instead of pegs - simple to put up and big enough for me and my gear.

I'll let you know what I think of it when I try it out in a couple of weeks time.

Thanks for everyones help.
