I've been looking forward to this book, so many thanks for posting the review.

Does anyone know, though, whether the gear section is orientated towards US gear? On occasions in the past when I've bought this sort of book there wasn't much/any discussion of kit available in the UK.

Many thanks for any help.

I'm sure Chris will answer that one.

I guess I'd better answer it then!

The book is orientated towards the US in that you'll find stuff on bear resistant canisters and desert hiking and other stuff not very relevant to the Pennine Way or the Munros. However most of the gear described in it is available in the UK. Also, the gear is described to give examples rather than to say "this is the best". I've tried to give pointers as to features to look for and what works with what and what works where rather than absolute recommendations. As Jon says in his review (thanks, Jon!) the specific gear info will go out of date anyway. The general approach shouldn't date though.

How Ironic...

I was just looking last night at my copy of the last version of backpackers handbook for information on stoves! I must say Chris, you're absolutely right, the general stuff you wrote in the last edition is still good. In fact, even the reviews aren't that much off what's currently selling.

Stephen.
