The Rab extreme seems a good buy. (esp at £120 athe Outdoors show)
Only used it twice but it's warm light and doesn't make you look like the michelin man
I've got a 900 fill North Face Nuptse - very, very warm but you do look like the Michelin man's fat cousin.

Edge of the world in Bowness has a stack of discontinued Yeti-made karrimor alpiniste down jackets on their sale rack in the attic, I've had one for two winters and its great, pertex quantum outer and really light.
Also, do you mean Edinburgh? Cos, it is always cold there.
Yeah i do mean Edinburgh, i have had a tnf down before and i find it is just a bit to short on the back for me.
I am a fan of Rab but there has to be a cheaper down which is just as good (maybe)??? i checked out the met office the average temp in autumn was 0.9C!!!
hello, chobs other half here! even if he gets a XXL the nuptse is too short on him (lanky!). I have a nupste at the moment and have lived in it for 3 years but I don't like the fact it has no hood! My ear-oles get too cold! Someone needs to convince TNF to make a nuptse with a hood then I would be a very happy bunny!
I have to jump to the defence of our granted slightly chilly city! But an Autumn average of 0.9C? That's a bunch of ar*e! I think the 0.9C might be the difference between a given Autumn and the long-term average. The mean temp is about 5C. Granted, not that toasty! Incidentally, I'd go for a Rab Neutrino Endurance. Warm, well-designed, light and great hood. £160 though...

It's not down but it is warm. I've got a Snugpack Sleeka jacket. Keeps me warm, it's half the price of a down jacket (£70)and it doesn't matter if it gets wet. Tested dwon to -15, but I know that depends on the individual.
DWON? That should also be 'down'

Have a look at the Rab Summit jacket....quite long and very warm. Fairly water resistant too. The Outdoors place in Stoney Stratford (alos online ) has then cheap. The ME Trango is good too, but the pockets are better on the Rab.
Kept me warm up Cairngorm in January.

The Joe Brown shop is doing Neutrino Endurance jackets at £150 but they're far too warm for Edinburgh. I shudder when I see people wandering around Tesco's in big down jackets. I'll maybe wear a fleece when it's really cold but that's it.

I managed to live quite happily in Edinburgh for several years without a down jacket.
You'd be better off with a decent waterproof and some cheap fleece.

 Thank you all,
Thats been some good reading for me!!! i do have a Rab Latok Jacket and a Photon hoody (and no i don't have more money than sense) i do run very cold tho.
Does anyone no if the cut of the rab Neutrino Endurance and the summit are the same??? reason for asking is this that i am 6'3 and the tnf is to sort???
P.s. the temp in ed i got from the metoffice.
thanks for reading!!

and i need a down jacket! I have reynauds syndrome and get v cold v quickly! I wear my dwn jacket non-stop at the mo! One of my mates didn't recognise me on campus a few days ago as I wasn't wearing it!
Looby If you want a longer line try the M.E. range they cover your bum up more.
The Rab Summit is long too...on me much the same as the ME

I have been looking at PHD mountain equipment, they do extremely light sleeping bags which I find very tempting. They also do down clothing and will do large sizes to order

There's a shop opposite Needle Sports in Keswick selling a Russian goose-down Duvet for £100 (reduced from £200) It's TX10 treated. It has box wall construction & removable sleeves & hood making it pretty versatile. Fabric is Tactel. http://www.bask.info/catalog/product.php?id=433

Just get a MHW Below Zero duvet - you won't regret it. It has beautifully-lined fluffy hand-warmer pockets unlike most duvets.
