I am currently in south America and during my time here I brought a MSR whisper Lite international stove. I fly home (UK) in 2 weeks and want to know will I be allowed to fly my stove home in hold luggage. I have cleaned the stove since the last time I used it.

err

I would think possibly not unless you wash the stove and fuel bottle so there is no trace of fuel in it

I can't remember where I read this, and it may be complete rubbish..., but I do remember reading that an airline refused to allow an empty fuel bottle to be carried because of risks from any vapour that might be left in it. The owner filled it with water there and then in front of them. Full of water ---> no fuel vapour: problem solved.

I've flown many times with my whisperlite & bottle. Obviously make sure its very clean and leave the top off the bottle. If there's any problem, it'll be with the bottle not the stove so be prepared to ditch it if necessary and buy a new one over here.

Make sure the fuel bottle is well washed.

I usually leave mine at the top of my pack with the screw top removed - so that it is obvious to the XRAY guys that it hasn't got anything in it.

respray the bottle blue or something then fill it with orange squash and take it as carry on! it's then a drink bottle not a fuel bottle so no problem there!!

take the lid off as others have suggested and keep the bottle open well before you get to the airport.
no liquid, no vapour, no worries.

Of the suggestions, only 2 are likely to work, fill with water or buy a new one on arrival. Even the slightest smell of fuel might be enough.

Don't try and hide it, disguise it or pretend it's safe. At best you'll lose the bottle, at worst be denied boarding and lose your flight.

Thanks for the advice, the bottle has had the lid off and been empty for weeks now so i think I will try to take it with me with the top off. If I have any problems I will just bin the bottle.

Rumour was that Air NZ domestic was being difficult at one time and came up with a procedure involving washing the bottle with cooking oil, sealing it and wrapping in tissue and a plastic bag. I never had a problem myself.
However I like the idea of filling it with soft drink and taking it on as a drink bottle.
