A friend is looking to buy a good-sized 3 man geodesic tent for car camping (probably 4 season, though I guess most of them are). Price is not to omuch of an issue. Having not looked at tents this size for years has anyone got any recommendations?

terra nova hyperspace or terra firma, both in the £500 area. the super quaser might do it, but it could be a bit of a squeeze if you've got a bit of gear.

a mate used the big north face geodesic, said it was crap.

MHW Trango maybe? They come in 2,3 and 4 man versions.

C, the MHW was on my short-list along with the new ME Torres 3XT.

Dr D, had forgotten all about the TN's though. Thanks

Any more for any more?

There will be a bit of gear - she wants room for a small child and all that gear too!!

if its camping with kiddy you're looking at may i suggest the wild country monsoon?

its a semi-geodesic but i've been well impressed with the stability and the standard of build.

we graduated from a TN quasar upon arrival of the sprog, the monsoon has been up in all weathers in scotland - even went to arisaig in march and it coped marvelously with pretty fierce winds, glencoe produced heavy snowfall and this was handled with aplomb while the lakes were midge infested and the monsoon was big enough for her to play in without us being driven out of the tent.

its got enough room for the sprog and the logistics regiment which follows her about. the interior and porch are about the same size - absolutely massive.

not sure i'd spend the extra £250-odd notes on going from a robust 3/4 season tent to a mountain tent. i have no problem pitching the monsoon anywhere i can take the kid, the mountain tents are overkill for any pitch you can get your kid to...

If you are really set on a full mountain tent then maybe include the Force Ten Spindrift as well.

The definition of "car camping" suggests these tents may be overkill unless you want to se them for other purposes as well.

Guys, thanks. Agree that when with the sprog a full mountain tent is overkill. The mountain bit is for when out without the sprog.

It will also mean that I will have access to a full-on mountain tent that I can borrow when I need one :)
