A plea for help!

I use Tracklogs, and i want to provide routes on my website in a format readable by all 4 of the main programs. Being, Tracklogs, MemoryMap, Anquet and Fugawi. I have used GPSUtility to convert .trl files into mmo (via rtx or something, bit of a faff, but it works), so i can do memory map and Tracklogs.

So what i'm asking is, what file formats can Anquet take other than the proprietry .arf files. GPS Utility fails to convert into this file, saying it's an empty file, etc, etc. So what other file can Anquet import, or does someone know how to get GPSU to export it as .arf.

Secondly, i need to provide files for Fugawi. Their site is not very informative, but i found somewhere that it uses .trk and .wpt files. I have managed to save a .trk file (The other not providing any data) and it opens with all the information in notepad, but can someone please test this file for me? I have put it on this page: -

http://www.walkeryri.org.uk/Routes/snowdon1.htm

Thanks guys.

p.s. any other file format used by shareware or that's compatable with GPS receivers direct i should know about??? Would a simple .txt format be useful perhaps?

I was thinking along the same lines a while ago for our routes, just MM and Tracklogs, but never got round to it.

If you must do Anquet, use .aef (Anquet Exchange Format). GPSU should successfully produce .aef files I think, but it will certainly not produce .arf.

You think Fugawi format is worth the effort, given the number of users?.

Thanks, but just checked, and it's .aef files i've been trying to produce (with no luck). Using latest version of GPSU too.

Are there any usage stats available anywhere??? I just want the routes to be accessable to as many people as possible, but i'm not going to lose 'too' much sleep over this.

GPSU gives me a message "no non-empty or selected route to export" when creating the .aef files. I've tried select all and every permutation on the save dialogue, to no avail.

Suppose a map on the webpage would do the job, but this again would take a lot of time to produce, and OS won't let me put theirs up (grumble)...

Ideally i need a general format that can be used by many, mabye .txt or similar.

You should perhaps consider the use of the GPX file format as supported by Easy GPS (www.easygps.co.uk). This is what I use on my website.

Dave,
I'm planning to incorporate exactly the same idea into the new bi-weekly routes I do for OM, and new features that are due soon. As well as GPSU you may find Waypoint Workbench useful. I've not tested the new version yet but it claims to be able to import from MM and export to Anquet.

Thanks for the help guys, the GPX file format might be the way to go. I can always put GPX files on there, plus a link to D/L easygps to transfer to a GPS (from where you can transfer into any mapping program). Only drawback is you need a GPS.

Anyone know what programs can import .gpx files? I've just tried the Anquet demo, and it wont import anything...

Still can't get GPSU to export an aef file...I can export waypoints into an aef file, but not the trackpoints. If i can't get this to export, then it looks like .gpx files and people can upload to GPS and lump it!

Still not sure if my fugawi file format works though.

Tried a version of WaypointWorkbench, but it looks like an old verson and wont export Anquet. If it does all that, then probelm solved.

I think this is a trackpoint/waypoint problem. New WaypointWorkbench won't recognise my trackpoints, insisits on waypoints. I think that's what GPSutility does too, as i've managed to save waypoints for one route.

Not sure what can import a GPX file. However, I use it simply because it can easily be uploaded to a GPS handset from a freeware package (Easygps) and then any mapping software can upload from the GPS.

The other software that may be worth looking at is GPSbabel (freeware to be found at www.gpsbabel.org)

Thanks, i have GPS babel, but it's a dos type prog and i'm not too hot at that sort of thing.

Still, i think gpx is the way to go, then, as you say, people can upload it to GPS if needed and then into mapping software. Chances are, someone with mapping software will have a GPS or intend on investing in one in the near future.

If only the software vendors gave proper info on their software on the website, i'd have a lot better idea what to do. Tracklogs 3 should be incorporating more import/export options, anyone know what they are, the current options are proprietry format or nothing.

Tracklogs V3 doesn't appear to offer anything other than .trl format (which itself has changed since V2 apparently, it now has an XML wrapper). Looking at a V3 saved route, it is still essentially binary data but expanded to printable ASCII.

Did they actually say they were going to offer additional formats?.

They are still at Build 3.06 which has the memory problem, currently gobbling 130Mb!. Maybe most of them are on holiday.

Well, i emailed them, stating there was a lack of export/import options and they emailed back saying it was going to be implemented in a future version.

They obviously meant build 7.045 ;-)
