Probably wise as many people here get ill by confusing them with Macrolepiota venenata. They're so distinctive that people don't bother to check. Saves taking a laxative I suppose

Never eat any fungus unless you're one hundred, not ninety nine percent, sure that you know exactly what it is, and what other fungi it can be confused with.

I have an ex-colleague who prided himself on his knowledge who is still on daily dialysis, is permanently thirsty and is still waiting for liver and kidney transplants years after he made a mistake.

I've just come back from Italy, where I picked and ate lots of funghi, and where a mycological friend advised me and anyone eating fungi to always keep three samples: one to eat, one for the doctor, and one for the coroner.

A better place than this for mycological ID is

There is a bracket fungus, which I think is called the beefsteak fungus. This is because if you get it at the right time and fry it it tastes like a good quality beef with a similar texture. DELICIOUS! Mind you I only had the good fortune to try it once on an organised fungi foray.

It usually grows around the trunk low down very near the ground and I think it only grows on oak trees but I wouldn't swear to that.

Edible and tasty. They're still about now.
Take your Polish or Czech handyman hiking in the woods and you won't need to bring any food...unless you're allergic to 'shrooms
