greetings mr bassnett!

a friend and i could not get a fire going and i was reduced to lighting my cooker in the tinder to get it going, it was a gooood fire in the end.

[fire was in a site of previous fires]

One of those little tea-lite candle things is useful in that situation. 

(or petrol)

Chris, the tealight candle idea is a sound one, works well, which is why there is one in all the pocket survival tin kits on the market basically; use a bit of Birch bark with it and feather some fire sticks in with the tinder too maybe, and it will catch well then.
