Do any of you have this jacket? What are your thoughts regarding durability/is it strong enough to cope with a backpack/breathability/waterproofness etc.

Considering it as a summer backpacking shell to cut down on weight etc but it must be up

to the job. This one.

I've had something in that fabric for a couple of years and its been fine for me.

The potential weakness might be breathability, that might depend how much you sweat etc - its been entirely fine for me.

Hydrostatic head more than high enough to be waterproof. The hood/other bits may or may not be limiting in terms of what weather you'd happily use it in - you'd need to check actual jackets, and their fit, for that. Given Montane likely pretty good.

Durability in terms of abrasion or tearing - so a rucksack - should be rather good actually.  Probably somewhat more so than the lightest event jackets actually. The face fabric seems to be ~microlight weight and thats known fairly tough.

The slight durability weakness is just that this sort of coating doesn't last for ever so there's a long term limit on its lifespan.

(note that the jacket is the old pertex shield, not pertex shield + which is a different coating and often rather lighter face fabrics.).

Hi mate,

thanks for that, as long as it lasts for 2 or 3 yrs as my main summer waterproof then that would be fine. I run hot and create alot of moisture build up inside my jackets and the atomic is only 7000mvt which concerns me slightly. Theres no pit zips etc. Ive tried it on and it fits perfectly compared to a Rab volt i tried on at the same time and the fit on that is all wrong but the shield + fabric was a plus point...i dunno

Would definetly expect it to last that long.

(Mine has lasted somewhat longer, although one way or another I've not actually worn it that often. Carried it quite a lot.).

The breathability might be a problem yes, hard to tell how annoying it'd be in advance.

why not buy a Montane Minimus Jacket, Pertex Shield +

had mine for over a year and it's doing well, got some heavy use on the WHW last October and has been used loads in the lakes, Breathability is great, inside sucks the sweat up, was a bit panicked the first time as i thought it was a leak but realized i'm just sweaty!!! Totaly recommend it, debating whether to get some of the pants to go with it.

Tried one of those Volts as it had more pockets but as you say the fit was shocking.

note that the Atomic is not old pertex shield just a different type.
