Adjustable rucksack??

Hi all, I'm looking to buy a new rucksack, about 25-40L, for hill walking. I want to be able to take it for a short walk but also a full day walk so I need it to be comfortable for this length of time with about 4-6kg in it. I've seen a couple of good looking packs that I fancy but I'm not sure about an adjustable back system? Do I need it? What are the benefits??

You only need 1 back size, they come with adjustable backs so that you adjust it to size and then leave it as is.
It is cheaper for manufacturers to make adjustable sacks than it is to make lots of sizes of the same sack. Some manufacturers do make them in sizes, but if you are a size they don't make then your pack will be uncomfortable.
I recently purchased a pack with an adjustable back, set it to size and now unless my back shortens or lengthens it will not be adjusted again.

My adjustable packs to get changed if someone else with a longer/shorter borrows them.  Roos and I have variously used our two Macpacs and adjust the harness according to which of us is using it.

But if it's just for you and you have one that fits there is nothing to gain from an adjustable back.  In fact you have something to lose, because you are paying for unnecessary complexity, and therefore extra weight.

If you are only using it for day walks and for weights under 6Kg, I doubt if a fully-featured back system will be of great advantage to you. But if you get a fixed back make sure that the pack fits you well.

Well even adjustable packs can certainly not fit You want to check anything really.

Certainly agree about not wanting so much back system though - even a framless pack should do 4-6kg entirely comfortably, and you don't especially want your pack being 25%+ of your net load.

Might be worth double checking the load range though, as water say can easily be 2kg for a full day.

Thanks for the feedback and advice, the pack is just for myself so I guess i dont need an adjustable back and definately like the idea of saving on weight and price!

Thanks!
