Alternative to Coleman Fuel

I can't find a thread that I think covered this a while back.
I'm looking for an alternative to Coleman Fuel at a low cost. I'm sure someone mentioned some solvent used in the auto paintshop industry. I'd be grateful for any leads.
Cheers,
Ross

It was Panel-wipe I think.

Naptha based (or just Naptha?).

Anyone else remember?

I bought some pane wipe not long ago - think it was £10 for 5 litres. Pretty much the same as Coleman white gas although I think the flash point is higher. However, I tested it in my Whisperlite and it seemed to perform very well - burned well and cleanly - recommend it as an alternative to expensive Coleman gas. Bought mine from Spraypaint supplies I think, who are throughout the UK.

Andy
You can't remember the exact product you used as £10 for 5litres sounds good.
I have a dragonfly and would be keen to run it on clean fuel. I use unleaded at the moment which burns well.

Hi Owen

Unfortunately my Panel wipe came in an unbranded 5l tin. Know U-pol and Leading Solvent supplies are brands that will work. Sorry I can't help .

Thanks any way Andy, I will look for U-Pol etc.

Any news on where to get it from Owen. I tried speaking with Silverhook's distributers but they didn't get back to me....

Just try any Spray/Bodyshop supplies shop as they will all sell it - think all Panel Wipe will be same composition.

Thanks Andy. I'll post on this thread if/when I have any luck. It'll be lovely to stop using gas cannisters for the most part.

I've just got myself an MSR XGK II. I got it running on Turps substitute but it was quite messy although that's probably as much to do with my technique as with the fuel. Anyhoo, if you want panel wipe, you can get it online here for £9.09 + £5 p&p for 5 litres. The saving over Coleman fuel at £6.50 for 500ml (Nevisport) makes it well worth the p&p.

I'm gonna try the place Andy Brydie got his from.

I have just asked the question about the panel wipe as fuel to 1st Assent, main suppliers of MSR stoves. They have been very helpful in the past and may shed some light on the problem of cheap fuel.
I will keep in touch

Thanks for the responses. The folks i asked haven't got back to me. Geoff, that link looks very promising, since I am a sassenach and there's ney chance of getting to Edinburgh before Glastonbury...

Owen, I look forward to 1st Assent's response, since the USP of these stoves is to use all sorts, I can't think of a convincing answer to the question why can't I use this sort of clean white fuel....

Marketing and markups, cynical methinks. In marketing minds, the sort of person who wipes panels is a very different segment to them's that buy coleman fuel and rarely the twain shall meet - until t'interweb came to be. :)

Having discussed this topic about using panelwipe elsewhere & got some input from some chemical savvy people I've decided to give it a miss. The stuff contains xylene & toluene - pretty nasty carcinogenic stuff. These are benzene derivatives (not to be confused with benzin).
I'll stick to paraffin.

James, 1st Assent has not responded at all.
I think I will stick to unleaded. The yellow flame burns a bit dirty but otherwise it is ok. As for the multi burner statement, it only burns the fuels listed in the catalogue.

Blimey! Regarding Spiritburner's comments!
Sounds pretty dodgy....so not exactly the same as Coleman fuel then (I hope!???)

So, which fuel burns cleanest for the cheapest price?

Unleaded or parrafin? Sorry for the dumb questions...

Doesn't unleaded petrol have benzene in it?

Or am I confusing it with something else?

I havent tried parrafin? Unleaded when a blue flame burns clean but when yellow, yuk!

Si....I thought that but didn't say anything...afterall, all fuel is toxic to some degree, no?

Owy...thanks....gosh I wish I knew someone who could give me a reassuring answer as this panel wipe stuff looks like it could be the answer. I want to see the end of my using canned bute/prop gas mix, which is expensive and leaves me with an empty can to dispose of somehow...
