Are tents with full mesh inners colder?

Hi Guys,

Looking to buy a reasonably light weight 2 person tent for under £150, and have been looking at the likes are Marmot Trail light 2 and TNF Rock 2, but they all seem to have full mesh inners. Would these be colder for use in the UK, especially when it's windy?

Appologies if this is a daft question

Apology accepted.

lol @ Grumps!

Yes, definitely. Some people on here have had mods done on meshy bits of their tents so they can velcro up a bit of proper tent material over the meshy bit if it's chilly or windy. Obviously that only works if most of the inner is proper tent material and not full mesh. I just stuff some clothes across the meshy bit of my Laser Comp if I think there's going to be a chilly breeze.

Yes... the wind can fairly whip through the mesh... and that will make them colder. That's often going to be a problem in the UK, but in some hot countries mesh inners would be a massive bonus. On the other hand, on a hot and dry pitch in Corsica some years ago with a mesh inner, every time the wind kicked up, I got blasted by a sandstorm inside my tent, and I was crunching on sand grains for days!

Thanks, that's what I thought. Might be better looking elsewhere then.

Tents with mesh inners are colder, but that's not really a deal breaker ime, apart from maybe in winter. I find it quite pleasant to have a bit of a through-draft in my tent for most of the year, providing my sleeping bag is fit for the job. I can see how being sand blasted might be unpleasant, but it's not a problem I've ever encountered.

Darra,

The North Face 2 isnt all mesh BTW...the 22 is, as its for the american market.

I have the Rock 2 and made sure of this before I bought it; only the doors are mesh.

Hope this helps!

Thanks TG, that does help

I have been looking at them on you tube, and thought the 22 was the same. Do you know what the difference is between them, apart from the mesh? The fly doesn't seem to come very close to the ground, is this the case? Also, how do you rate the tent?

Many thanks,

Steve

for what its worth i used a Trailstar this winter...tarp with plastic sheet for floor no probs is colder but good gear deals with that and alot less condensation ....roll up floor pull out pegs quick shake packed gone and even with a tent a mesh inner shud be a lot lighter...my other shelters a scarp 1 but ive have no worries of using a mesh inner tent

I really like it mate! Bought it for a trip into the hills with the missus and it's spot on bar 2 things :
You can only peg open one of the doors. So if you are cooking and the wind changes you can't peg the other out to shelter from the wind (hope that makes sense!). Also the zip flaps dont have velcro so the wind lifts them and will let rain through to the porch... Not a big deal to me, I'm just being picky and I was looking at mods to improve it.
It's got the gear loft as standard which is normally a extra ??20 and is handy! I only noticed after buying that the hydrostatic head rating is only 1500 mm (minimum obviously) , which is low compared to my other tents, but I really don't see it as an issue.
Not had it in gales yet, but it stood up to some strong gusts really well and didn't flap excessively. I didn't think the fly sheet was so high that it was a problem either... Higher than my T0 trek but still didn't notice cold draughts.

Will get photos and a video to you later. Seen some on ebay for??140 recently... You can't fall off at that price.
