I just brought one of these, I found them on my recent search for a ebook reader and whilst I can't see me reading a novel on a 2 inch screen, I do think it should be useful. They are currently going for £150 on amazon (b grade - damaged box). Also add that they have stopped production of them, It seems they havnt sold and couldn't compete with ipod. They was featured on the gadget show where they seemed rather impressed and stephen fry loved it. For £60 it has to be a safe bet:

2 inch high def full colour screen.

robust design

MP3 player (all reviews I've read claim its top quality sound)

FM radio

video player

photo viewer

ebook reader

voice recorder (built in mic)

torch (appears quite bright)

4 gig built in memory or upto 16 gig sd card

only 170 grams for all this in a crank powered product is amazing.

1 min crank = 45 min usage (next gen crank mechanism)

comes with quality ear phones.

Get one while you can !

Also add that it can be used as an emergency mobile phone charger.

I had two in 2008. The first didn't work out of the box, the second broke in a couple of months, and was only realistically usable when charged via the AC cable. 45 mins sound to a minute's cranking is wildly optimistic. Sound was pretty good, video less so. It's essentially the kind of generic rechargeable MP3/4 player you can buy for a few quid in a Chinese market, built into a honking great plastic box with a crank on the back. Menu system was clunky at best. Nice idea, shame about the execution.

Are you sure it was this product? There was a version previous to it.

You tell me. Get back to us in six months...long term testing, it's great, although best done when someone else is footing the bill.

I will do that, I've read other reviews and havnt come across the problems you had, fingers crossed I guess.

To add to that I've read a review that claimed to have dropped it numerous times with no problems and another review that claimed it could withstand estreem temperatures. I'll post my own review in a couple of months.

I'm sure about the two I had - which is the model Stephen Fry gushed about.

32g, 8GB, £20, run it off rechargeables if you're that way inclined.

I'm pretty certain you had the previous version, it seems this one came out in 2009 and doesnt even have a ac cable.

lol Wick, thats confirmed it, Fry did have the previous version, this one was improved in every way.

Charged via USB, I should've said. I was getting about 5 minutes sound to a minute's frantic cranking. One can only speculate what people on campsites thought I was up to in my tent.

LOL

I know that its more money but surely an iPod would be a better bet?

I don't think you can hand crank one of those bedders.

Thats true you can't but you end up forsaking a substantial number of great features for it and to be honest charging isn't a particularly hard thing to sort for an iPod.
