Bearpaw Bad Experience

I've had an incredibly bad experience with John at Bearpaw.  I called him because I was torn between a Pyra and Bearden and I wanted some modifications.  I wanted a light single wall tent with a full net door and floor so that I could have the doors open for ventilation and still be protected from bugs.  I was set on a Pyra but he convinced me that a Luna was better suited for me as it already had the full net door and he could easily modify the floor so it was full.  He also said it would weigh about 16 oz.  I got the tent, weighed it and it was 26 oz not 16.  I emailed him to ask why.  He said that he had never made a Pyra with a full net door so wasn't sure about the weight and it was what it was.  I was floored... I ordered the Luna.  He insisted that I didn't... apparently he failed to note that I ended up wanting the Luna and so made me the Pyra which weighed way more than he said it would.  I will admit I didn't notice that on the invoice, in the notes, that he put Pyra.  I honestly thought I was getting a Luna and didn't notice the mistake.  I thought he knew what he was doing.

He refuses to admit his mistake, so now I'm out over $400 and stuck with a tent that is only a few ounces less than my current one.  I've contacted the BBB but I don't think it will help.

I would stay away from Bearpaw until he gets his stuff figured out.  His website is a mess and it's hard to figure out what's what on there.

Anyone have suggestions as to a further step?  It's not like I can go above his head as he is the owner.

As you're a new member here i've taken the liberty of e-mailing John to point this thread out to him, so we can hear his take on it, for fairness.

That's fine.  I forwarded him my submission to the BBB.

should also point out that this is a UK site..personally I was wondering who Bearpaw are (and actually, since they are in Colorado, do I care)?

I thought this had been covered by your card anyway Maxine.

I just found out from another forum that this was possible.  I just phoned my credit card company 15 min ago and found out that I can go this route.

Good news then.

Btw, John e-mailed me back and asked me to post this response.

Yes I know her.  But if you want to post my response I would appreciate it.

She originally wanted me to modify a bear den tent to put in a net floor.  I said that I couldn't do that and the pyratent was a better choice since I could put the net floor in.  She asked me for a weight and I said about 6 oz for the floor. She now wanted to add a full net floor.   I didn't give her a weight on the door.  We talked on the phone.  She wanted it in .51 oz cuben.  She needed it in less than 2 weeks.   She mentioned the luna but I said I don't do the luna in .51 oz cuben only .74 oz cuben.
I sent her an invoice for the modified pyratent and she paid for it  (it clearly stated pyraTent on the invoice).
I mailed the tent out for her and she used it on a 1 week camping trip. The packing list that she got also confirmed that it was a pyratent and not a luna.  When she got back  she said it weighed 26 oz (but that included everything) and she wanted to return it.  I said that it was a modified pyratent (custom) and it had been used so I couldn't take it on return.  At this time she figures out that it was a pyraTent and not a Luna tent.
There is nothing wrong with the tent.  I think that she brought the tent for this camping trip and planned on returning it anyway.  Now she is mad and wants to discredit us.

I had to google them but considering how much US gear bought by members here in the UK I guess it's of interest.

Omigod.  I used it one night.  I had no plans to return it.

I fully remember our conversation.  I originally was interested in the bearden or pyra, but he discouraged me from them and suggested the Luna because it already had the full door.

He said that the weight quote was off because he had never done this combination before yet in a later email he said that he has put lots of full doors on pyras.

When I got the tent I immediately emailed him to thank him for my Luna.  Why would I thank him for a Luna if I thought I bought a Pyra???

And the weight was 26 oz for everything.  That was the tent only.  Not the pole nor the lines and stakes.

I have never had to do this before and don't like being accused of being a liar and basically a thief.  I am simply standing up for myself.

For what its worth I think that "John at www.bearpawwd.com" is the innocent party here and that anyone else reading this thread will come to the same conclusion.

Maxine, it's none of my business really but when someone signs up just to slate a company i'll always look on it suspiciously and if possible make the company aware of it so they can respond, as i've done here.

That's the extent of my interest and i'm now done being "the go between".

Wow.  I wish I had recorded the conversation.  I know what I ordered.

I'm seriously discouraged.  I only did this so that others would know of my bad experience and to try and figure out another way to settle this.  On another forum, someone suggested my credit card which, as it turns out, will help me with this.  I've never had to use my credit card for this purpose and don't like doing it but I paid over $400 for a product that I didn't order.  I ordered a 16 oz. Luna not a 26 oz. Pyra.

I hope that if you ever caught in a situation such as this you would have more helpful people behind you.

A net floor?
08/05/2012 at 20:19

"A net floor?"

Lets the condensation that falls from the tent walls drain away fast while also keeping scorpions at bay.

Maxine, you've got to understand there are people out there who will falsley discredit people for any number of reasons, my only interest was to establish that a transaction had taken place between yourself and the company and allow them the same exposure that OM offers in a response, above and beyond that i have very little interest to be honest.

Aye, I was wondering about the net floor.

she's american...they dont get scottish (or lake district) bogs.

Maxine, I'm with Twiggers on this - I always get suspicious when someone signs up on a forum to slag a company off.

If..on the other hand, you had said you were having a problem with a company (maybe even not naming them initially) and could you have advice as to what to do, then I would have much more sympathy with and for you.

There is such a huge difference in story that I really dont know who is telling porkies. Good luck to you both

But i would have thought a floor was a floor. I know what you mean about the 6" or so of net at the sides.

I fancied a Pyra but found the website hard work so didn't bother.

If it was marked on the invoice it was a Pyra which you then proceeded to pay then you clearly you DID order a Pyra.

If you added the wrong item to a shopping basket then payed for it, used it for night and then tried to return it to any store here i suspect you would have issues.
