Does anyone know if the Berghaus Askival jacket from gooutdoors is meant to be any good? Doesn't seem to be any reviews of it on the net.

It'll be on sale next week down to £100 so thought I might be tempting..

I've only tried paclite once 3/4 or so years ago, never again.

Leaky?

My experience was sweaty and barely waterproof, right from the off.

Their quoted RRP a bit misleading I'd think. You'd have to work rather hard to find another paclite thing going for 230 nowadays. Indeed you can get sundry 3 layer fabrics - including both active shell and event for less.

Even the 'sale' price of ~170 was rather high to be honest. 100 is a little bit off but nothing dramatic vs say RABs volt at ~130 in practice.

(This is guess work but I would have to imagine that the 230 was an old rrp or something.).

From what I can figure out the Askival is unique to gooutdoors, so the RRP is probably a complete fiction.

hmmm have heard good things about the RAB volt, will do some research on it. I checked out paclite after twitlegs comments...doesn't seem to have the best reputation so think I'll knock the askival on the head

If you're after a lightweight waterproof, the Montane Minimus is a good option. It's pertex shield like the Rab Volt.

I bought one about 2-3 months ago. I was after the Rab Volt, but they didn't have it in my size, and i was too impatiant to wait for them to re-stock.

All i can say is, what a mistake!

Don't get me wrong, it's not been leaky, and i've not had much problem with condensation (though without pit zips it could be). I've used it about 4-5 times now, and some of the rain has been really heavy.

The problem for me is that it just doesn't feel right. When i tried it on the fit seemed ok, but having used it with a pack it seems to ride up in the body and arms, and no matter how much i adjust  the hood, it seems to pull back. It's not as bad when i'm out with the dogs, but far from perfect.

I'm going to get a Volt,as Rab gear fits me well, and use the Berghaus for walking the dogs and nipping to the shop. Don't think it's good enough for anything better than that.

Thanks for your feedback Jamie.

Completely gone off the Askival now. Went to gooutdoors and tried the Volt on, great fit, nice long arms aswell, in the past I've had to go a size up in jackets just to get the arms to fit.

Did try on the Montane Minimus at another outdoor shop, very similar to the Volt, minus the pit zips. But the hood seemed slightly better on the minimus as the collar came up higher on the face...on the volt its completely exposed. *Sigh* decisions decisions!

Fit is definetly worth having

If it helps, fairly different weights of face fabric on the volt vs the minimus and consequent differences in net weight and durability.

(The volt having more of both.).

I see what you mean Martin, the minimus is 1/3 lighter. Would def swing it for me, as I'd prefer abit more durability vs weight savings

A bit leftfield but the new Karrimor Event jacket isn't half bad at £99, if you can overcome the stigma of having THAT badge on your chest. i've been a convert since last week.

Lets clarify shall we ....

Go Outdoors - left arm - whats right arm doing !!!

Anyway, i had the last paclite when on offer for 60 ... they have nowhere, in the UK at present, the newer colours from the ad ...

I have the red with black trim, which i will swap if they get the other colours in.

This Askival is good imo.

Non folding hood, that is much more sturdy, higher neckline.

No messy flaps over zips.

Two NON mesh pockets you can USE. One inside one.

MASSIVE underarm zip each end, vents.

Higher daypack friendly, said 2 outside pockets.

Worth 120 imo easily, and defo WORTH a look at least.

Black and red trim for me.

Well, i'm not impressed with go outdoors in coventry over the last few weeks ...

Got refunded and got the firefox in black and red trim from cotswold ...

This askival paclite is nice, but very glad i researched more and got the active 3 layer firefox, i cant tell the difference in weight from it compared to my paclite .
