Anyone remember a make called "caravan" they did a range of rucsacs as well as sleeping bags. Something to do with Northern Feather. Are they still around anywhere? I believe they were from Norway.

I remember them - in fact I'm sure I have one of their bags at the bottom of one of my wardrobes - a pink and blue one I think. Don't know what happened to them? I also seem to think they were from Norway or thereabouts, but a quick Google search doesn't show anything.

It was a Danish company and now seems to only exist in a Canadian offshoot:

In the late 70s and 80s Caravan sleeping bags, packs and tents were quite popular mid-range items. I still have a Caravan down-filled cap that I sometimes take on winter camping trips.

I've still got a bag somewhere. It was meant to be quite a warm bag, but did not live up to its promise....but that may have been hyped by the assistant in the gear shop (Ellis Brigham I think) as the extreme temp is rated as about -10....comfort is probably +10.
No shoulder baffle, and green.

I seem to remember Caravan made a range of bags from top quality down ones to budget synthetics.

I was the sales manager for Caravan till it's closure in1989. The brand has become Nordisk and has recently become available in the UK. Contact The Ark Group 01524 822084. Andy

Interesting info Andy, I have a Caravan New Odin synthetic bag, no longer used but it was a warm bag. The hood was good compared to a lot of bags back then.

I'm surprised to hear that they closed as early as 1989, I would have guessed 91-92. I have a Caravan brochure from back then and they sold other stuff as well as sleeping bags, there was one tent at least, the Kaipak, a transverse 2 man ridge tent IIRC.

I still got my old hilleberg keb from about 82 - sold under the caravan brand.  I think all the caravan tents were hilleberg, there were about 7 or 8 in the range back then.  I've still got some brochures at home.

I thought their down bags were great - not quite so convinced about the rucsacs though.

I still have a Caravan "Trip" 2 man transverse ridge tent, bought second hand around 87/88.  I still use it once or twice a year, last used at the Red Squirrel in Glen Coe May Day bank holiday.  Good solid tent, hope to use it for another 20 years+

Going back to using my old cari-combi bag as the new ones are too sweaty in the summer, as it splits into two bags. Still have the caravan tent. the ground sheet wore out and had a thicker one to replaced it. Still good.

Down jacket still works to this day!

Hi, does any one no how to erect a Caravan Kaipak II tent
04/11/2010 at 08:31
Hi I still have a grey outer, red inner Odin sleeping bag - all good after 25 or so years. Did not try and bring my caravan down bag into NZ - customs get a bit grumpy with feathery stuff. Also had a Kapiak 2 tent - loved it initially but fondness wore off when it got saggy on dewy nights. Repegging to prevent fly and inner touching meant the thing tore out pegs when the sun rose the following morning. Putting it up went better when pole was inserted through alloy ring on end of elastic from inner, always pegged fly out first with inner dangling inside.

Bill Bain,

I still have a Caravan Kaipak and it's still in fair order. You can erect the tent without the inner, or with the inner connected. I find it easy to put up either way.If you put inner and outer together then

1 Peg out 4 corners of the inner and slot 1 pole into base pole holder and through hole in fly sheet. I find it easier to slip a guyline over the pole and run it out at 90 degrees to tent and peg out.

2 Do the same with the other pole.

3 Peg out the inner and outer by first pegging out the corners of the outer, then the rest and adjust.

If you're erecting outer first, then peg corners out loosely. put pole into flysheet socket and guy out. Do the same on t'other side then attach inner and peg out.

Hmm I just dug my old (1989!) Caravan Northern Feather sleeping bag. It is made from parachute type material and is poly filled and coloured brightly pink, yellow and purple - it was an awesome bag, the interior label showing the name 'New Sky High' and rated at -15°c. I have actually tested this in November in Norway and I have to tell you I was as warm as toast in the mountains in a hutta with the windows open all night. The zip has since failed, and is torn on the inner. I'm about to get it clean and repaired - my 7 year old son will take it camping with him. I have used it for an emergency duvet and resisted throwing it out for the last 23 years. Wow. It has been around the world several times and kept me warm in New Zealand for many years. I bought it for an expedition to the Chilean Andes in 1990.

I binned my Odin bag several years back in the USA  at 20+ year old & well worn out when I got a new bag from REI.   Used for car camping & a real comfy bag.  My mate has a Caravan tent still - can't remember the name.

I wonder if it's a Kaipak? They made a Kaipak 2 and a Kaipak 3. The 2 is a really well made tent and I took it out last autumn and it stood up really well to a windy/wet weekend at the campsite on the shore of Derwentwater. I still can't find the heart to get rid of it, as it is still totally weatherproof and I like the 4 separate doorways that you can get in or out of; and no matter which way the wind blows from, you can have a sheltered porch for cooking. The only downside that I find with it, is that its on the heavy side, well it also takes a lot of pegs which contributes to the weight. I guess though, that for a 2 man tent, 2.25kg aint that bad.

Think I'm talking myself into using it more regularly!!
